    Celtic are locked in a battle with West Ham, West Brom and Burnley for Republic of Ireland defender Shane Duffy.

    The Parkhead club are close to securing a £5million deal for Albian Ajeti after the Swiss striker flew into Glasgow on Wednesday morning.

    And Sportsmail understands no nonsense defender Duffy discussed a one year loan deal with Neil Lennon earlier this week.

    Under contract until 2023, the 28-year-old is keen on a season in the the SPFL. However, a deal remains a long way off and depends on the clubs finding a compromise over a loan fee and wages.

    Duffy made 19 appearances for Brighton in the English Premier League season, but looks to have slipped behind Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster in Graham Potter's pecking order.

    Dutch international Joel Veltman has also joined from Ajax, with the Seagulls prepared to let the Irishman go.

    West Ham boss David Moyes worked with Duffy at Everton, but is restricted by a tight budget.

    West Brom are willing to pay a transfer fee to secure his services on a permanent basis.

    Does sound promising if McGowan is reporting it.

    I think he would definitely come here but I think it complicates things if West Brom are looking to do a permanent deal but we are only looking at a loan. Unless it was a loan with an option to buy.

    He is exactly what we are needing in defence.

    I hope it's a loan to buy, a guy who would instantly improve our defence, is very experienced and in his prime. Even a full on loan won't be as bad as I don't think Brighton will want £10 million next year. Either way hopefully this happens.

    Exactly what we need. I didnt want him when he was leaving Blackburn but he is perfect for us right now.

    He should've had priority over Ajeti. Instead of wages and transfer fee going for a striker, another defender would bolster the actual weak area of the team.

    Our striking options was a massive weak point aswel. We had eduard. Gifs constantly injured or in the bad books. The others dont have much about them. If we had ajeti at the weekend he may well have put a couple away.

    Think he's limited, however is a bruiser and that's what we probably need.
