Birmingham City retire number 22 after Jude Bellingham's transfer to Borussia Dortmund

Birmingham City have announced they will retire Jude Bellingham's shirt number following his transfer to Borussia Dortmund.

Bellingham sealed his move to Dortmund earlier this week and becomes the world's most expensive 17-year-old with the transfer fee set to eclipse £26million.

The youngster played his final game for Blues against Derby County on Wednesday night and fought back the tears as he made his way off the St Andrew's turf.

And Blues have now confirmed they plan to retire Bellingham's number 22 shirt 'to remember one of our own and to inspire others'.

The club has published a tribute piece to its youngest ever player and goalscorer on its website, which revealed the news.

A passage reads: "In such a remarkably short space of time Jude has become an iconic figure at Blues, showing what can be achieved through talent, hard work and dedication.

"His caring, humble and engaging off-the-field demeanour has also made him such an impressive role model.

"The 22 shirt has become synonymous with Jude, his rise to the first team aged just 16 years and 38 days and these qualities.

"And as such the club have decided it would be fitting to retire this number, to remember one of our own and to inspire others.

"Prior to his last game the club held a private celebration for people close to Jude's development. It was an opportunity for all to come together and to recognise the help and support Jude has had from all at Blues, notably the academy, and to provide him with another fitting farewell memory.

"Throughout the elongated transfer process that eventually made Jude the world's most expensive 17-year-old, he remained focused and totally committed to the Blues cause, which showed the importance of having a supportive family behind him."

Bellingham leaves having played 44 times for his boyhood club, scoring four times.

His move to Dortmund was confirmed on Monday, following months of speculation in which he was also linked with Manchester United.

And after completing his move, Bellingham paid tribute to his boyhood club.

"I can’t thank Birmingham City enough for what they have done for me, not just this past year but since the age of seven," he told Blues' official site.

"Of course I wish everyone associated with the Club nothing but the best. Once a blue, always a blue."

Dortmund were delighted to capture the teenager.

"Jude Bellingham has decided with absolute confidence to pursue his career at Borussia Dortmund," said the Bundesliga giant's sporting director Michael Zorc.

"The primary motivation behind his decision were the prospects on the pitch we were able to offer him.

"He has enormous potential, which we will continue to develop together with him over the coming years.

"He already boasts astonishing quality with and without the ball, and has a strong mentality to boot.

"Jude will immediately strengthen our first team squad, but we will certainly give him all the time he needs to adapt to the higher level of play."

    Tragic.

Even more tragic that some clown in the comments is trying to say they're a bigger club than us.

Bit premature that gesture I would say. He seems a good lad but he wouldn't be the first to peak early and fizzle out. Imagine he went off the rails a la Islam Feruz or Ravel Morrison. Would Birmingham then un-retire his number? As for the guy who thinks Birmingham are a bigger club than us, I'll have a pint of what he's drinking, por favor. I could do with an escape from reality for a while.

This has to be a very late April fools day joke ,,, aye ?

Imagine if we had talked about retiring the number 7 jersey ... I guess this shows the levels they operate at compared to us - they celebrate selling a kid who has done hewhaw in football, while we get to celebrate actual legends who have done something in football.
english football, it can't get much more embarrassing can it.
    Embarrassed for them.
