BY winning a ninth successive league title this season, Celtic clinched their 11th domestic trophy on the bounce. Rewind almost four years to September 10, 2016 and the Hoops were yet to lift their first of seven straight trophies under Brendan Rodgers – and were yet to lock horns with city rivals Rangers under the Irishman’s stewardship.

The Ibrox side had won the previous derby by way of penalty kicks at Hampden a few months prior, and with Mark Warburton’s men now playing domestic league football in Scotland’s top-flight, bragging rights hung in the balance at Paradise.

With striker Leigh Griffiths having picked up an injury days before the match, the mostly unproven Moussa Dembele stepped in. Then just 20 years old, the forward led the line in his first experience of Scotland’s fiercest derby. And, wow, did he handle that pressure well.


With goals in the 33rd, 42nd and 83rd minute – scored with his right, left and head, no less – Dembele netted a hat-trick, becoming the first player to do so in the fixture since Stevie Chalmers 50 years before.

Supplementary strikes from Scott Sinclair (assisted by Dembele) and Stuart Armstrong complemented the Frenchman’s haul, as the Scottish champions swept their rivals aside 5-1.

“It feels great for me to score a hat-trick in my first Glasgow derby and it was something unbelievable that I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” Dembele told the Celtic View in an exclusive interview at the time.

“As a player you always have to be ready when the manager needs you. I was coming on in the last couple of games and we had a problem in the team so I had to come in and show what I’m all about and that’s what I’ve done.

“I’ve been waiting a long time for this, I’ve been training hard and we’ve all been training hard as a team. We showed we are a group of lads who are good together. We’re like a family, we work together and that’s what we showed and we got a big win.

“It wasn’t until after the game that I realised I had scored a perfect hat-trick. During the game I didn’t think of it but even if I have to score with my heels I will score with my heels!"

 

What a player and again and again getting it done in the biggest games.
