The game didn’t take place on the date as stated due to the coldest winter in the U.K. and specifically Scotland since 1962/63. The game was called off and rescheduled for Wednesday 1st February but again fell foul to the weather. It would eventually be played on the following Monday in front of a reported 22,000 fans.

Celtic Legend and Lisbon Lion goal scorer Tommy Gemmell would bring his young Dundee side through to Glasgow for the fixture and were duly handed an unforgivable hiding. It was youngsters for the hoops who certainly made an impression that night with a special mentions for George McCluskey (hat trick), Tom McAdam (Double) and Young Thomas Burns. TB would open the scoring very early in the 4th minute. Dundee equalised 5 minutes later. Celtic went in 2-1 up at half time but the avalanche awaited Dundee in the second half.

These are the lineups according to the match programme.

Three names jump off the page to me and it has more to do with their unknown qualities and who they were. The rest of the team should be mostly recognisable to Celtic fans of a certain vintage.

    Firstly we have…..

Joe Filippi. From the off it is strange that Joe should be in the Programme Celtic lineup as he was cup tied. No matter he is still of interest.

Joe Filippi was an Ayrshire born lad and started his career with Coventry down in England. He made no appearances and made his way back home to turn out for Ayr United in defence. A very respectable 187 appearances in 7 years which alerted Celtic. Joe would turn out for the hoops 32 times between 1977-79 from here he would move on to Clyde. Finally he joined Glenafton but bowed out of the game early in 1981.

Frank Munro. Born in October 1947 in Broughty Ferry, Dundee. He plied his trade with local team Dundee United before moving on to Aberdeen. Here his quality was spotted by a very good Wolverhampton Wanderers side who transformed him from midfield to Defence and it worked in Munro’s favour. Between 1968 - 1977 Frank made 296 appearances and this included a UEFA Cup Final defeat 3-2 to Spurs in 1972. Just two years later he would be lifting the League Cup at Wembley in a win against Manchester City. Frank Munro would earn 9 Scotland caps whilst at Wolves. Signed in 1977 by Jock Stein as cover for the injured Pat Stanton but his Glasgow stay was short and after 15 appearances he was on his way to Australia. Signing up for South Melbourne Hellas.

    Lastly….

Jim Casey. Glasgow born and bred August 1957. Signed his first professional contract with Celtic in 1974 having been spotted playing for Celtic boys club. He was to spend 5 years at the hoops but made only 11 appearances as a sweeper. Casey would move to the U.S. in 1980 and join up the new soccer drive to try to get the public’s attention. It was Major League Indoor Soccer team Phoenix Inferno. Due to homesickness Jim was back in Scotland just a month later and signed on at Arbroath. After 32 appearances in three years for the club at age 26 he decided to call it a day and retired.

Celtic marched on through to the next round and a tie with Kilmarnock at Celtic Park on the 27th February. It finished 1-1 and the fourth round replay at Rugby Park see the Bhoys knocked out by a single Killie goal.

Thanks to Celtic Wiki for these player images.
