It should absolutely be part of the curriculum, you have to learn about every part of your country's history...the good and the bad, warts and all.

That was my initial thinking too mate but then I thought history should be taught about events that have shaped the culture and foundations of society. Black history, slavery etc has had had a profound effect on the current demographic and social unrest we currently have in Britain and throughout the world.

You can't define history by colour but you absolutely can by events.

In Scottish schools it should be Scottish history and its language that is taught in EVERY place of education.
That includes about famous people or pioneers in Scotland that same from everywhere in the world.
EG: Andrew Watson - FIRST Black footballer in British football captained Scotland in a 6-1 win against England in 1881

Mohammed Salim - FIRST player from Indian Sub-continent to play in European football

I don't think history should be defined this way. Which part of slave history would you focus on? There's the Arab slave trade, the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, the Barbary slave trade, Slave trades within Africa itself, modern slavery in Africa/Asia right now, etc.

I don't think black history should be defined by slavery. Surely there are greater achievements for them as a people than merely being enslaved.

These just seems like quirky facts rather than any real serious history.

Read the text in the petition, it mentions teaching history of all cultures.

You have changed the subject to fit. The petition is for black history to be taught at school, not teach black history and to * with all other cultural examples of when slavery was a huge factor in our history or the achievements of black men and women.

The history of black culture wether you agree or not is entrenched in slavery. The numbers of Africans snatched from their families to be dispersed around the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe and Britain are astronomical.
The wealth created from the African slave trade forged cultures and societies so to teach this and how black lives in the future were defined by this auspicious start seems very sensible.

You asked what kind of slavery would I focus on; every * kind is the simple answer. You seem to think we can only do one thing here. Seems quite a blinkered way to define an opinion. We have evolved you know, we can do many things at the same time.

Modern slavery is happening today, right now in Britain. You dont need to go far to find it, I would also like this taught to children.

It's all about education,.... I blame the schools.

Considering the chat is about British black history, I'll hazard an educated guess at the british black slave history.

    Seen that.
" will include all cultures including Asians "
So if you "include" all cultures then it just becomes history.
When I was at school history was diverse, we learned about the tobacco barons, American revolution, Indian uprisings and slavery from Roman times to American war of independence. You can't just learn about the history of one thing like the boxer revolution. Black history is as important as all other history and all other history is as important as black history.
Again, I don't think we can define history by colour.

Maybe they could start by teaching about their imperial crimes against half the planet and work from there.

The point is, there’s a lot of history that isn’t taught, that should be.

    I agree with you.
I think it's important that schools do teach about black history, but to specifically teach black history as a lesson in itself seems to be a knee * reaction to events in America.
History teaches us about ourselves and we can learn from our mistakes in the past, well it's supposed to.
And to concentrate on one specific aspect of history as seen through the colour of someone's skin seems to me, to be the wrong route to go down.
Black history is an important part of history, but it is only a part of history.

We’re largely in agreement, but what I got from it was they’re asking for that to be taught specifically, because they believe it’s largely ignored by the education system.
