Do remember when they tried to say that Morelos was in the same bracket as Edouard. A huge section even said he was better.

    * belter. Only in the same league because of geography. Edouard is light years ahead of Morelos. One will go onto have a fantastic career, the other will be a journey man or waste it at some boring mid table team abroad.

IN another incredible season for Celtic, the team won the league title for a ninth consecutive season, replicating the historic achievement of Jock Stein’s legendary side of the 1960s and ‘70s.

Neil Lennon had started the current run of title success, winning three leagues in a row between 2012-14 before Ronny Deila took up the mantle. He then won back-to-back titles before Brendan Rodgers’ arrival at the club in 2016.

And the Irishman steered the Hoops to some momentous achievements – an Invincible Treble, followed by the Double Treble, and putting the team on course last season for an extraordinary Treble Treble.

He left the club in February 2019 to join Leicester City, and it was Neil Lennon who returned to guide the team home in the league, as well as securing the Scottish Cup.

And this season, his Celtic team kicked on, winning 26 of their 30 league games, scoring 89 goals, conceding just 19 and establishing an unassailable 13-point lead at the top of the Premiership table.

With the Hoops on course for a Quadruple Treble, having also booked their place in the Scottish Cup semi-final, football came to a hold with the coronavirus crisis.

And with no prospect of an imminent return to action, the SPFL made the correct decision to conclude the league and announce Celtic as the Champions of Scotland for the ninth year in a row.

    THE KICK-OFF
It was on Saturday, August 3, 2019 that Celtic kicked off the 2019/20 Premiership campaign with a home game against St Johnstone. It was also Flag Day at Paradise, and it was Liz McNeill and Sadie Chalmers who unfurled the flag as the Celtic Family continued to mourn the loss of Billy McNeill and Stevie Chalmers. The game itself was a portent for the season ahead, as Neil Lennon’s side hit seven without reply. Mikey Johnston scored the first goal of the league campaign, while Ryan Christie bagged a hat-trick. And there were also goals from Olivier Ntcham, Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths.

    KEY GAMES
Two away wins were pivotal in the nine-in-a-row campaign. The first of those came at Ibrox back in September 2019, when Neil Lennon’s side dominated the derby and won 2-0. Odsonne Edouard scored the opening goal just after the half-hour mark while Jonny Hayes completed the scoring in the final minutes. Celtic’s form after the winter break was unstoppable, though they faced a tough challenge when they headed to Pittodrie in the middle of February. Callum McGregor opened the scoring on 10 minutes, but that was cancelled out later in the half by Ash Taylor. But with the game heading for a draw, Kristoffer Ajer popped up in the 81st minute with a cool finish to give Celtic the win.

    WE’VE WON THE LEAGUE AGAIN
It was on May 18, 2020 – the anniversary of Celtic founder, Brother Walfrid’s birthday – that the declaration came from the SPFL that season 2019/20 was finished and Celtic were the champions. The ongoing coronavirus crisis had caused the postponement of football as the Hoops were marching to their ninth consecutive league title, but there can be no doubt that the correct decision was made by the SPFL and that Celtic are worthy and well-deserved champions.

    TOP LEAGUE GOALSCORER
Odsonne Edouard, 22 goals in 25 games plus 2 substitute appearances.

    MOST LEAGUE APPEARANCES
Callum McGregor played in all 30 of Celtic’s Premiership games.

    IN THE CUPS
The League Cup was retained for the fourth consecutive season, with the Hoops winning a hard-fought final against Rangers. Christopher Jullien scored the only goal of the game, while Fraser Forster’s heroics at the other end ensured another great day at Hampden for the Hoops. In the Scottish Cup, Neil Lennon’s side had progressed to the semi-finals, where they were due to play Aberdeen. And on the European stage, while there was disappointment at going out of the Champions League qualifiers, the subsequent Europa League group-stage campaign was impressive as the Hoops topped the group and progressed to the last 32. In the group, they beat Lazio home and away, with the 2-1 win in the Stadio Olimpico the first time a Celtic side had won in Italy.
