REPORTS suggest that Celtic are chasing Rennes' right-back Brandon Soppy.

Only recently turned 18 and without a first-team Ligue 1 appearance to his name, the teenage defender already has some of the most ambitious clubs in Europe on his tail, with a price tag which has already in the region of £7million.

Back in November it was Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Midlands club with ties to Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes, who were being linked with the player by respected French newspaper L'Equipe.

Now it is Celtic, with a French journalist working for Eurosport.fr claiming that the Parkhead side and French outfit Nice were tracking the player.

If Manu Lonjon is to be believed, the favourites for the player's signature right now may be RB Leipzig.

He wrote on Twitter: "RB Leipzig is accelerating strongly on Brandon Soppy (Rennes). Nice and Celtic (among others) also interested."

While Soppy played no part in either of the two meetings between the two teams in the Europa League last year, Celtic did get a chance to look at the player as he played the second half in a goalless July friendly between the two teams at Parkhead.

Although full back is rated his best position, he can play anywhere across the backline.
The academy structure in this part of Brittany is highly regarded, having developed world class talents like Youann Gourcuff, Ousmane Dembele and Tiemoue Bakayoko of Chelsea.

The teenager has also played a major role as tournament debutants Rennes have booked a last 16 spot against Inter Milan in the Uefa youth league.

On the face of it, Celtic would appear to have plenty of excellent options at right back, where they have three players vying for a starting position.

Hatem Elhamed was just returning from injury when the coronavrius pandemic shut down the season.

Moritz Bauer has earned pass marks this season, while Jeremie Frimpong has the kind of game-changing talent for a teenager that could make the spot his own for years to come.

The financial backdrop, of course, is challenging throughout the continent.

If the French media reports are to be believed, though, Celtic still have their eye on the best young talent in Europe.

I highly doubt we made an offer for a right back in the current circumstances and given we already have El Hemed, Frimpong and even Lee O'Connor there.

I could see Elhamed moving into CB next year, so some health competition for Frimpong would be good, especially if it's only for 1.5m. O'Connor will go out on loan again imo

Then that would make more sense to me if he is a center back.

Have we actually signed many players from French teams? Eddy and Jullien? Weir on loan too (but he wasn't worth the 10m Lille paid for him) . Ntcham and Moussa were signed from English teams.
To be honest there is probably tons of players in that league who would come to us. Their wage structure is far lower than England.

That's 20 years ago. If you want to go past the last 5 years Fortune and Doumbe are other signings from France.

Seems to be a right back who could play centre back, as much as elhamed or lustig ever did. The ability may be there to cover, but they are not centre backs and should not be considered as one of our first team centre backs (we need four).

So not getting why we would have made a bid, unless we knew that elhamed was also for the off?

Elhamed and frimpong seems perfectly fine, a steady head and a young dynamic player.
Adding another young player in to the mix is just going to limit game time for frimpong, which makes no sense.

We may have sniffed at some point to be linked, I just don't see why we will have made a bid though.

Agree with the above. I see a maximum of £10m spent this summer. I actually think right back is a place we are fine.

If any money is spent I see player or two being sold trying not to be pessimistic but if they are choosing to slowly faze out measures and allow football back .... I hope to * they don’t cut stadium allocation because it will hurt the clubs revenue stream
