I've got derby on my coupon.

That’s crazy. Some player for Cardiff, always thought he could have stepped up.

Football is in need of a "rethink" and the coronavirus pandemic is the time to do it, according to Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman, who claims around half the clubs in the Championship are up for sale.

Dalman's comments echo those of EFL chairman Rick Parry who earlier this month told the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee clubs were facing a £200 million "hole" by September and that there was a need for a "proper reset post-Covid" in terms of business models in the Football League.
"Football reminds me of the city of London 30 to 40 years ago: when regulation didn't exist, commissions were very high, brokers were doing all sorts and inside trading was rife. And then you had the Big Bang and everything changed. Football needs a rethink. It needs a Big Bang of its own — and this is the time," Dalman told the Sunday Times.

"This is the opportunity for the game to do something meaningful. But I don't see where the leadership is going to come from so I'm sceptical."

    Premier League handout

Estimating the pandemic would take 30 to 40 per cent of clubs' bottom lines, Dalman said "there are already around a dozen clubs up for sale in the Championship, they're just not public".

Furthermore, with clubs likely facing no matchday income until next year, Dalman said Championship clubs and those below would not be "economically viable".
"You are going to have to deal with a financial crisis at the end of all this with a number of clubs looking for buyers and a token gesture from the Premier League is not going to be enough."

The Premier League, Dalman said, is "sitting on" £1.5 billion cash – a reference to its latest reserves as recorded in its financial report.

"Give 20 per cent of that. If you distribute that on an even basis throughout the Championship the whole financial position changes. It's £12.5 million per club which is roughly what we're all burning."
