It can happen easily when you think about it: the team in 7th after 33 games play their last 5 games against poorer sides than the team in 6th do. It's essentially two different leagues after 33 games.

Pretty sure it happens a lot. However the 7th team plays St Mirren, St Johnstone and Hamilton, 6th plays Celtic, Aberdeen and Rangers.

The easiest way to settle any problems is at start of season set up the 44 matches if there werent a split so that there should be 2 home and 2 away for every team. Once the 33 matches are played take way the matches after split that would be against bottom 6 teams and you then have 2 home and away matches for each of top 6. Simple.

So theoretically the team in seventh could win all their remaining games after the split, end up fourth and clinch a Europa spot?

It’s ridiculous. Just looks completely tinpot.

38 games in a season, but essentially teams could be prevented from a possible European spot after 33 matches.

No. The team that finishes 7th can no longer finish above 7th as the league is split into two mini leagues. For the least 5 games it is effectively an SPFL Premiership 1 and SPFL Premiership 2.

Could they not just split the league after 22 games ?

then the top 6 teams play each other home & away ( same for bottom 6 ) .. 32 games in total

only thing i would add is that games are pre determined by position.. ie team 1 plays team 6, ( 2 plays 5, 3 plays 4 ) and the top 3 teams choose whether they want home or away first.

nice even split and no interference from officials about who plays who in which order.
