Celtic in fundraising friendly to mark 50th anniversary of Fraserburgh lifeboat tragedy
The Lisbon Lions played Fraserburgh after five life boat volunteers lost their lives in 1970 and the club will head north again 50 years later to commemorate those who lost their lives and raise money for the RNLI.

Celtic have announced a special fundraising friendly to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Fraserburgh lifeboat tragedy.

Five RNLI volunteers lost their lives after a lifeboat overturned due to a freak wave in gale force conditions while escorting a Danish fishing vessel to safety on January 21, 1970.

More than 13,000 people attended a joint funeral for the five men as the disaster rocked the local community in the Fraserburgh area.

Shortly afterwards a Celtic team, including members of the Lisbon Lions, travelled to the town for a charity fundraising match against the local team.

The team was made up of stars such as Cesar, Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Lennox and Bobby Murdoch - all led by the Hoops' legendary manager Big Jock.

More than 6,500 turned out for the occasion and raised around £2,000 for the bereaved families.

Now the Parkhead club have announced that they will face off against Highland League side Fraserburgh FC to mark 50 years since the tragic incident.

Funds raised from the match will go to local good causes, including RNLI Fraserburgh.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said: “Clearly we have a very close connection to the tragic events of 1970, with Jock Stein and the club ensuring in 1970 that the local disaster fund was supported.

"We know for many in the local area that these events will still cause hurt and pain even after 50 years. However, after discussions with Fraserburgh FC we felt that once again we should mark this anniversary year, come together and pay our respects to those who were lost and their families".

Details of the match will be announced at a later date.

See the Celts have confirmed a friendly with Fraserburgh FC to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the loss of the Fraserburgh lifeboat and resulting deaths. When the tragedy happened big Jock took a top Celtic side up north to play Fraserburgh playing several lions in a strong Celtic side.....this is what Celtic are all about..............

Seemingly Celts came to Fraserburgh the week before the European cup final May 1970...locals used to wind up celt fans that the celts "enjoyed" themselves so much enjoying Fraserburghs hospitality it in part contributed to their complacency and losing what would have been a second european cup to Feyenoord !!!!!
