EVERYONE at Celtic Football Club is saddened to hear of the death of former player, Duncan MacKay, who has passed away at the age of 82.

Dunky, who played for the Hoops between 1955-64, making 236 appearances and scoring seven goals, is rightly considered a Celtic great. His first-team debut came in August 1958, in a League Cup tie against Clyde at Shawfield, which Celtic won 4-1, and he soon established himself as first-choice right-back in the team.

A highly-rated defender who was an early exponent of the attacking full-back role later honed by the likes of Tommy Gemmell and Jim Craig, Dunky MacKay was a firm fans’ favourite and his leadership qualities were identified by Jimmy McGrory, who made him captain in 1961, succeeding Bertie Peacock as skipper.

He would later pass on the captain’s armband to Billy McNeill for the start of the 1963/64 season.

In November 1984, he moved to Third Lanark, before heading out to Australia where he would eventually settle after a brief return to Scotland. He also gained 14 caps for Scotland during his playing career.

The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Duncan’s family and friends at this very sad time.

Dont think many on here will remember him as a player but to make captain of the team means he must have been a great player , it's nice to keep their memory alive here and the little snipits we have from notorious is good , players from the youtube era will always have good footage to recall how the played and the players around them , it's so important to have the history remembered, rip Duncan McKay.

I think he really was a great captain and player who has been overshadowed (understandably) by the achievements of what came after with Stein and Cesar & co..

I could watch old vintage match footage all day long (very actually likely now) and especially Celtic stuff from the 50s and 60s...

This one is great... headscarves , bunnets and a soggy ball that would concuss a rhino..

This is the Scottish cup final replay from 1961 - Celtic v Dunfermline. Just shy of 90,000 at Hampden, there were 114,000 at the drawn game the previous week.

Dunfermline were managed by Jock Stein and Celtic by Jimmy McGrory.

Duncan MacKay was captain and the side had the ‘embryonic’ Lions of Chalmers, Clark and McNeill playing that day along with Paddy Crerrand .

Only a snippet but you can see some good foot skills from Chalmers and Crerrand.

MacKay obviously at the coin toss at the start.

Captaining Celtic v Valencia in 1962

Makes a ‘captains clearance’ off the line a couple of minutes in...

(incidentally... you can see why Matt Busby came in for Crerand)
