Aye your probably right mate, even the ones loaned out probably won't make it with us. We've been quite lucky in recent years with producing KT, hope Ralston and Johnston get game time next year.

CELTIC’S Development Side slipped to a 1-0 defeat away to Motherwell at Forthbank, with David Turnbull’s second-half penalty proving the difference between the sides.

The Motherwell midfielder converted from the spot in the 73rd minute after Wallace Duffy had been penalised for fouling James Scott in the box.

Tommy McIntyre’s team were unable to fashion an equaliser in the remainder of the contest, and they will now look to bounce back on Monday when they face Hibernian at Cappielow.

Ross Doohan started between the sticks in the only change to the team that dispatched Kilmarnock 4-0-0 before the international break. The goalkeeper, who part of the Scotland U21 squad for their game against Andorra, replaced Ryan Mullen.

Up front, Jack Aitchison led the line, fresh from bagging three goals for Scotland U19s during their UEFA European Championship elite round fixtures.

Chances were at a premium in the opening exchanges, though Daniel Church and Broque Watson did attempt to provide some thrust down the flanks with some purposeful runs.

At the other end, Doohan made a comfortable stop from James Scott’s shot from the edge of the box as both defences remained on top.

Operating in the No.10 role, Ewan Henderson looked the most likely to provide a spark of creativity for the visitors, and he almost handed the young Hoops the lead nine minutes before the interval.

After some crisp passes, the young midfielder received the ball around 20 yards from goal and flashed an effort narrowly wide of the post.

Just minutes into the second half, McIntyre’s team came even closer to taking the lead as Watson smashed a volley on target, following a cross from the left, and only a superb reflex save from home goalkeeper, Rohan Ferguson, denied the winger.

Lewis Bell then tried his luck from distance after Scott had fired high and wide at the other end for the hosts.

As the game moved beyond the hour-mark, the Steelmen enjoyed a period of pressure, and a dangerous from Kyle MacDonald saw Shea Gordon make an acrobatic attempt, which was blocked by Robbie Deas.

With 20 minutes remaining on clock, Doohan came to the Bhoys’ rescue, racing quickly from his line to block Alfredo Agyeman’s shot after Gordon had sent the forward scampering clear.

Moments later, they broke the deadlock. Duffy was penalised for a foul on Scott in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, with Turnbull finding the corner from the penalty kick.

The young Celts tried to mount some late pressure in search of salvaging something from the game but it was to be a frustrating afternoon in Stirling as the hosts claimed all three points.

CELTIC (4-2-3-1) Doohan; Duffy, Welsh, Deas, Church; Bell, McInroy; Watson (Caffrey 74), Henderson, Savoury; Aitchison
Not Used: Willison, Campbell, Diver, Potter, Mazis

What's going on with Mcintyre? Didn't his Development Squad go Invincble a season or two ago?

This is not good, we need to progress not become beatable, the rest of the league will think we have weak links. That spreads through the squad and into the first team and it's an uphill battle rather than the confident team we were only a season or two ago with Jack being the youngest player to score for the first team. The Academy is our bread and butter, we won't always get great loans or signings like Moussa or Ntcham. Hopefully we do but come on Tommy, sort it out, you have already shown you can do better.

CELTIC and Hibernian drew 1-1 at Cappielow this afternoon (Monday) in the first part of a double-header between the sides, who meet again this Thursday in the semi-final of the Youth Cup.

Today’s clash was a league game, and the Hoops had to be content with a share of the spoils despite dominating much of the match against a Hibs side who were reduced to 10 men after just three minutes when Sean Mackie was red-carded for a bad tackle on Grant Savoury, with the Celtic man was forced to come off just a few minutes later.

Not surprisingly, with the numerical advantage, Tommy McIntyre’s side enjoyed the bulk of possession, although it was the visitors who came closest to scoring when they hit the bar just before the half-hour mark.

As the half wore on, Celtic were creating more chances and in the 40th minute, Leo Mazis fired narrowly over after he’d been set up by Broque Watson. And on the stroke of half-time, Ewan Henderson tested the Hibs goalkeeper with a shot from 25 yards out that was well-saved.

The 10 men of Hibs got a real boost just eight minutes into the second half when Lewis Allan opened the scoring. Celtic immediately pushed forward in search of an equaliser, and PJ Crossan was denied when the Hibs keeper dived bravely at his feet to deny him a chance inside box.

But with 11 minutes of the match remaining, Celtic got the goal their efforts deserved. Thomas Caffrey did well down the left flank before playing the ball across the area into the path of the onrushing Watson, who fired home to level the game.

The Hoops had further chances, with Watson and Caffrey both coming close, but the game finished 1-1.

Now the sides meet again this Thursday, April 5 at the Hibernian Training Centre (KO: 12noon), with a place in the final of the Youth Cup at stake. Entry is free, so get along and cheer the Bhoys on to victory.

CELTIC: Mullen, Potter (Duffy 62), Welsh, Deas (c), Church, Henderson, McInroy, Crossan, Mazis (Aitchison 62), Savoury (Watson 9), Caffrey.
    Subs: Willison, Bell, Diver, Campbell

It’s no about winning trophies at youth level it’s about producing first team quality players, who gives a * if they win anything as long as some come through

I know what you're saying but winning at least shows they have some quality there. The development team have been fairly poor this season which doesn't say much about the talent in the squad.

Building a winning mentality at an early age cannot be a bad thing, surely?

It isn’t but there’s been plenty of teams who have dominated at youth level and no one has made the step up

CELTIC were knocked out of the SFA Youth Cup in the cruellest of fashions, losing 4-2 on penalties after their semi-final clash with Hibernian at Easter Road had finished goal-less after extra-time.

It was an entertaining and fiercely-contested cup-tie, with both sides always looking to take the game to their opponents, and it was surprising that there were no goals in 120 minutes of action.

The home side began on the front foot, and Ross Doohan in the Celtic goal produced a good save after just two minutes. Mikey Johnson, making a welcome return to action, was causing Hibs problems with his direct running, but the Hoops weren’t able to capitalise on his good work.

Doohan again came to Celtic’s rescue in the 23rd minute when he tipped a fierce drive on to the bar before the ball was cleared by his defenders.

Just after the half-hour mark, Johnson slipped a ball to Ewan Henderson inside the box, but his flick was well-saved. And from the resulting corner, Stephen Welsh came close to giving Tommy McIntyre’s side the lead.

Into the second-half and both sides continued to swap chances, with Doohan continuing to perform impressively in the Celtic goal, while Regan Hendry was trying to test the Hibs keeper with shots from outside the box.

As the semi-final edged towards extra-time, Jack Aitchison claimed for a penalty after his shot was blocked, but his appeals were ignored, while Hibs raced up the other end of the pitch, with Oli Shaw coming close with a shot that went narrowly wide.

The game went into extra-time, and it was Celtic who started more positively, with Aitchison and Kerr McInroy both denied by the Hibs keeper.

With little to separate the sides, the Youth Cup semi-final was decided by a penalty shoot-out, and it was the Edinburgh side who emerged triumphant to book their place in the final.

CELTIC Development Squad coach, Tommy McIntyre, believes that competing in the IRN-BRU Cup will prove beneficial to the young players coming through the Celtic Academy.

A Celtic Colts side will compete in the competition for the third season in a row, and like in the two previous campaigns, their first fixture will be against Annan Athletic. The Hoops face an away tie against the League Two side in August, and it’s a game that McIntyre and his young players are looking forward to.

Speaking to the official Celtic website, the Celtic coach said: “There are a lot of good teams in the competition and Annan Athletic are no different. They knocked us out last year, so one thing we need to be careful of is to guard against complacency, as we always do.

“We always prepare properly but it’s a big competition for us and for the young players at the club and we’ll prepare as we normally do for the game.

“We’re always looking to bridge the gap between the Development Squad and first team, and to get that level of competition. When you think about two years ago, we did really well and got through, played Livingston and the bulk of that squad are now in the SPFL, so it just shows you the level of competition.

“So I think bridging the gap and giving the young players opportunities to play against men as such, and the crowd as well, I think it’s a great stage for us and it’s a great level for us to be involved in.”

The young Celtic players are already back in the swing of their pre-season preparations, with plenty of matches lined up before the competitive action begins.

And McIntyre explained that this is an important time for all the players, who will benefit throughout the campaign from a good pre-season.

“We’ve got one or two younger ones who have come up, while one or two are away with the first team which is what it’s all about,” the Celtic coach said. “We’ve got a long pre-season and we’ve got some good games to look forward to.

“We play Marseille down in England, we go and play Man Utd over in Ireland and we play Partick Thistle, so there are a lot of games. We’ve got young ones who are really enthusiastic and we’ve got a few lads coming in so we just need to be careful with them because pre-season can be pretty tough, but if they get a good pre-season, it’s a good base to set them up for the season.

“Ultimately, the target is to improve each player individually, but we’ve got the collectiveness when we get these tough games and we really test them in the games and looking forward to who can be the next one to make the next step into the first team.

“You’ve got Ewan Henderson last year who made his debut and we’ve got a sprinkling of young players such as Kerr McInroy, Regan Hendry, Mark Hill and Jack Atchison. The big thing for them is to improve and get them closer to the first team.”

SHAUN Maloney says coming up against Manchester United in the opening match of the SuperCupNI is tremendous early-season test for Celtic’s reserve side.

An U19 Hoops team will go head-to-head with their Red Devils’ counterparts at Coleraine Showgrounds on Saturday evening as the prestigious international youth tournament, formerly known as the Milk Cup, gets underway.

Fans far and wide will be able to take in the match, as it will be screened live on the BBC Sport NI website (www.bbc.co.uk/sportni) and Facebook,(www.facebook.com/uniladmag) with a kick-off time of 5.30pm.

And the coach told the official website that the young Celts were determined to produce a positive performance against the English side and impress the first-team coaching staff.

“It’s opening the SuperCup, a really well-known competition for youth football, and it’s a great game for the young players,” said Maloney.

“This game is an U19 game so two or three of our over-age players will stay behind to be with the first team. In terms of the calibre of the opponent, it’s one of the elite clubs in the world so it’ll be a big test for our 19s.

“Quite a few of the young players have been with the first team in pre-season. I know the coaches in the first team will get to see the game so it’s another game for them to try catch the eye and hopefully produce a performance and a result against an elite team, who we should have had last season in the Premier League Cup.”

The clash with United will come hot on the heels of the second-string’s 3-1 victory over Kelty Hearts last weekend, with Jack Aitchison, Lewis Bell and Ciaran Diver on target.

That was the young Celts’ fourth friendly fixture of pre-season and Maloney and Tommy McIntyre have been pleased at how the players have been progressing since reporting back for duty in June.

“There were lots of parts of the game I was really happy with,” said Maloney. “We went 1-0 down pretty early but we continued to play the way and system we wanted, showed a good mentality and scored some good goals to win 3-1.

“Kelty have just been promoted to the Lowland League, it was a good game and an exercise for the players, with a lot of players playing 90 minutes so it was a pretty positive day.

“That was our fourth game. We played East Kilbride, Partick Thistle’s first team, Cliftonville and Kelty. The standard of opposition has been mainly senior which brings a physical challenge to the players but so far, they’ve met that.

“I’ve been really happy with the first four or five weeks of pre-season,” he continued. “The players’ attitude has been excellent. We’ve worked them really hard physically and in the last couple of games, I’ve been really pleased with some of the play we’ve been trying to work on.

“Our age-group would be predominately U19s and with two or three at U18 and two or three who are U20,

“It’s a similar group to what we had last year, though we’ve added three players from the U17s. Our group was very young last year and with that year’s experience, I would be expecting an improvement from the team this season and the three younger players who’ve come up have done really well and we’ve been really pleased with them.”

The likes of Mikey Johnson, Stephen Welsh and Ewan Henderson have all featured for the top team during pre-season, including last weekend’s 4-1 win over Standard Liege.

And while that’s a huge fillip to the whole Celtic Youth Academy, Maloney knows any young player earning promotion to the senior squad can’t afford to become complacent.

“The players up with the first team have done particularly well but when they step back to the reserves, they have to understand they have to continue the work to then get back to the first team.

"It’s no time to rest or be happy, they almost have to kick on again as it’s even harder to stay in the first team, so they need to put in more work and be prepared to do that to stay in the first team.”
