All times this was tried, in India, US, among others, when big european clubs bought a local league team, this either turned out to be a vanity project with little to gain from or was abandoned quickly due to be a money sink.

I would rather we bought a CB to be honest

Rayo Vallecano had a club in USA, didnt last long. I think Atletico de Madri and Man City also have affiliated teams in "emergent markets", they never gained much from it but then they sit over an endless pile of money and dont really need it.

A lot of talent coming through Australia. Think this could be a good move.

Don’t we have a similar deal with Santos Laguna in Mexico? Don’t think we have ever signed one from them though.

No we used to have some agreement where we have first refusal on any of their players. If team A bids £1million for Player B then we can have the player if we match the bid. But i'm not sure how it worked in our favour as Scotland is quite strict on work permits.
I think the agreement ended though.

Man City paid $9.75 million for Melbourne. Huddersfield paid potentially £10 million for Aaron Mooy.

As you say they don't need the money but it isn't as simple as throwing money down a drain.

Could be a good idea. Bring any good prospects over as trialists and also with next year's World Cup Celtic would probably have first pick of their World Cup team that play for the Mariners

Wasn't the deal with Santos simply as an "affiliate"?

Aye, had the first options, plus it's an avenue for sending some of your players off to their club on loan.

Granted, my knowledge of affiliate clubs comes solely from fitba manager :56:

    Could be a good move..

Wouldn't mind seeing our best youngster's like Johnston and Aitchison etc heading out for 6 month's/a year playing top flight football away from their surroundings but in an English speaking country..

Only thing is, is their much talent coming through in Australia just now? Their national side doesn't seem to have much. Hardly a golden generation of some of their older side's who were playing with a lot in the top flight of different league's so not sure how fruitful it would be for us. It hasn't been very successful for us previously..

Should have taken the gamble in the American league years back. Turning out to be one * of a league with plenty of money and talent coming through. Ship has sailed though.
