    @Minty Surprise me!

In this instance though, it just doesn't make any sense. Why would we take a deal to the point of completion and then make up some excuse to cancel it when we really do need a CB? We wouldn't even need an excuse to change our minds if we didn't want to sign him. There's a lot of distrust towards Celtic board/PLC but to take it this far seems mad.

One thing signing him. It's another thing making the lad our main CB for the CL like you thought, then Brendan would be wrong. But as I support BR 100% I would think he was maybe for development. But that is my opinion. You could be right, we may have missed our main target.:50:

CELTIC were committed to shattering their transfer record with an £8million-plus swoop for Patrick Roberts — until Pep Guardiola changed his mind.

SunSport can reveal the Hoops had agreed the outline of a permanent deal with Manchester City for the dazzling winger.

Brendan Rodgers was sure he had secured a remarkable transfer, with Roberts having already emphatically told City chiefs he wasn’t interested in going anywhere else.

But City gaffer Guardiola then performed a U-turn and decided the England Under-20 ace would remain their player for at least another 12 months.

That left Celtic having to settle instead for another season loan agreement, which is still costing them a seven-figure loan fee plus a major chunk of his lucrative Etihad wages.

Rodgers and Celtic fans remain thrilled to have Roberts, who delivered 17 goals in 60 games during his first 18-month spell at Parkhead and was a key member of last season’s Invincibles.

But there’s every chance the Hoops board will try again next summer to keep the player, who is in line to make a second Celts debut at Hamilton next Friday.

The club’s current transfer record of £6m is shared by John Hartson, Chris Sutton and Neil Lennon, all of whom were signed by Martin O’Neill.

Celts No 2 Chris Davies is excited by what Roberts can once more provide for the team.

He said: “It was the right thing for him initially to go back to Manchester City, see how things went there and take his time to decide what would be best for him.

“It’s a credit to the club for bringing him back in and the conditions he worked in when he was here made him feel this was a place for him to come back to.

“We are excited to have him. He is an extremely talented footballer and someone people enjoy to watch play.

“He is a fantastic dribbler, a fantastic creator of chances and a good goalscorer as well.

“He gives us a great option in attack and we saw last year with the goal he scored against Manchester City that he can do it at the highest level.

“He’s a player that makes a difference in games. Players who can be decisive and create an opening are always harder to come by.

“There is certainly more development for Patrick and that’s why he has enjoyed working with Brendan so much.

“I am sure that is something Patrick will have in his mind, coming back to perform but also to develop even further.

“We always knew how much he enjoyed it here and always knew that, if it was right for everyone, he would do it.

“It was hope at first but then the signs became more positive as the window went on."

Impressed me playing for a poor Sunderland side. Comfortable on the ball and a good passer, would suit our style of playing out from the back. Can play centre half or as a defensive midfielder. Would be a good option to have.

CB was priority to alot of us but if the right players for rodgers hasn't been available theres not much else that can be done. he trusts the players and we can only give them the support they need for the season ahead like always hail hail

It is a * shambles from the get go. We like to put out sound bites of being a big club, but * me our transfer dealings couldn't be further from a big club if it tried.

We never signed a centre back, so here's a wee story of us apparently going to spend £8m to stop you all thinking we're tight fisted *.

The negative spin that the media will put on our transfer window will be embarrasing. I'm quite happy, centre back away from being a great window. This for me was more about maintaining and slowly adding extra bits of quality, which we have done.

Some people will moan about loan signings, we have basically had Roberts for over two season, if he was our player originally he would probably already be off. Also the boy from PSG, if what I'm reading about him is true then he could be a real talent, and if we have a buy on clause then even better.

Let's enjoy the season and see what Brendan can achieve with this squad!

Not even really any names mentioned about any potential defenders we had possibly targeted.

For anyone who's not seen this.

Total of 28 players left the club this summer on a transfer fee, free transfer or loan.

A nice wee soundbite to keep everyone in order. Don't be surprised if we hear that we'll be trying for him again in January..
