James McCarthy plays for Ireland, why would he play for Ireland if he wasn't Irish? A lot of silly people on this forum.

Just spoke to a mate from Liverpool, he's a lifelong toffees fan and his son is on the coaching staff. He said james was good 2 seasons ago but since then he's been sh!te. We can have him and probably for a lot less than we are talking. They want him off the wage bill as he reckons he's on £60k a week

Don't shoot the messenger just passing on what I've been told.

Personally I think new surrounding might do the bhoy the world of good.

Is he the composed midfielder that we need? No.

Jesus, close the thread and re-open if we're in talks.

Can't go this "he felt Irish, a feel Irish too, naw he's Scottish, he was born here, naw it's not about where you're born, is Shaun Maloney Malaysian then" merry-go-round.

    * me man. Tedious.

He's Scottish he grew up here, Scotland ignored him at youth level, despite talk being he was eager to play, he has recent ties to Ireland and like many of us in the same position has an affinity. He was approached to and decided to play for Ireland and has done well, fair play to him.

He's not some Provo cult figure, I doubt his heart belongs to Ireland and he's not fussed about the Scottish National team either. He made what's proved out to be a sensible decision.

Can we just talk about him as a potential target? Actually half don't want him to sign if this is the conversation that will come up in his thread daily.

As an Ireland fan when I have seen him at his best its when he is playing in front of the back 4. Any time hes used as a box to box type hes hopeless. No question though sitting in front of the back 4 hes top class. Would be a brilliant addition if hes to play there.

Not sure about a loan deal. Loan to buy maybe aye, rather any of our signings to be permanent tbh

Glad we've established that he's Irish.Read a post earlier that said his career has stagnated,I dunno about that, but I'm sure Brendan would get the best out of him.

He's most certainly not the big defensive midfielder that'll break things up nor is he the creative midfielder player that we've heard Brendan speak of wanting.

He's that inbetween type (normally means they haven't got an outstanding quality) which we already have plenty of here in the midfield.

Can't say I'm excited about this at all, for me he is a player that is seen as probably a good bit better than he actually is due to playing in the super duper EPL.

Load of bollox IMO. If he says he's Irish then who are you to tell him otherwise?

Also, I'm happy enough to just talk about him as a potential target but you can't just make a post like that and not expect people to argue with it. It's like saying 'I've said my piece, lets move on'

If I grew up in Scotland or England to parents/grandparents that were Irish and brought up believing I was Irish and being proud of my culture/roots etc only to be told by someone that I was a Scot/English, I'd want to give them a slap to be honest.

    I think he's a very effective CM.

A year back he was still rated as one of the best defensive minded CM's down there and on form, he is.

353 games by the age of 25 shows the engine and stamina he has on him, rarely injured. He is kind of like Joe Ledley, in many ways.

For the pressing game Rodgers wants, there are very few better out there who we could potentially get.

Another thing on McCarthy, he seems to have seriously lost a lot of his attacking and creative instincts since going down south.

I remember him at Hamilton as being a little nippy type that would create things, now he's bulked up and commits lots of fouls very rarely going forward.

Not sure if they've just tried to change his game/position as he got older or if it was decided he couldn't be the player he was up here down in England.
