Been watching this and it's actually quite disturbing. The level of inbreeding allowed by the Kennel Club in dogs is horrifying and would be extremely illegal if the practices that are used to breed dogs, were used to breed humans.

The KC will happily register mother and son bred dogs or brother and sister bred dogs. Sickening.

The inbreeding has led to a large number of breeds having health problems. Pedigree dogs are bred to conform to the breed standard, which is based on appearances only.

Many breeders actively murder puppies that don't conform to the appearance of the breed standard.

Evidence points to cross bred dogs being healthier and living longer. I was considering buying a dog but I'll avoid supporting the pedigree dog trade now.

Will give this a watch later. It really is shocking, and the disposing of the pups that don't weigh up to the breed standard is just sick!
I have always said that I would never buy a dog, always adopt!

I have a pedigree lab, I also have his family tree though.

He has interbreeding but it goes back several generations and his 'granda' was a Crufts champion. Don't think there's any Lab that doesn't have interbreeding at some point.

I agree though, puppy farms are * disgusting. We got Harley from an actual farm.

The cruelty to and exploitation of animals is something that never ceases to anger me.

Supposed dog lovers too! I used to always watch Crufts and marvel at the beautiful dogs and love the whole feel good factor involved, and all the obedience tests etc......now the whole thing sickens me and i would never watch it.

I had a pedigree boxer from Donegal. Brindle Ben of creashlough, boy was a living legend. He saved me one night in a forest when I was attacked by glue sniffers in Belfast. He Took everyone one of them to the floor and only left me and him standing. His da was called stormin Norman so he was always gonna be a hard *. I miss him still 10 years on.

I actively avoid getting a "full pedigree" dog. Got one, apparently best of breading etc. Apart from looking stunning he had health problems galore. Poor we guy only lived to 3. Broke my heart but always got we cross breads since and perfectly healthy. Maybe it was bad luck but it put me off them.

C'mon Minty. What do you expect.
    Have you seen the owners.
Lots of interbreeding going on there.

You're right. I'm not saying that dogs who suffer illnesses due to inbreeding should be discarded, I just agree with the documentary maker that breeders should be forced to move away from inbreeding. Breeding with cousins and grandparents is still allowed and that's still vile and will only end up being the end of some breeds.

In the second documentary, it is mentioned that 10 of the most popular dog breeds face eventual extinction if the same inbreeding continues, including labradors and Germand Shepherds.
