Another negative in "new fitba", is not playing 2 up front. Our midfield takes forever to support Griff or Jamesy.

Zonal marking in general? Yes, I support it's use. Zonal marking at Celtic? No, we have proven time and time again that our players lack the intelligence to use it well. Nobody takes responsibility for their zone, which makes the whole system break down.

Anything done badly is a bad idea. Zonal marking as a concept doesn't become bad because we got pumped off of Malmo.

Hate zonal marking... If people overload your zone then you are *! And against 2 or 3 running players... Man marking is the way forward.

Mix it up, should have 2/3 players in a zone to block any attempts, but also ready to attack the ball if crossed into the 6 yard box. The remaining players should man mark and do whatever they can to stop the attacking players. It was ridiculous that Rosenburg was left unmarked.

The point in zonal marking is that the amount of players in the zone doesn't matter; the defender is to ignore the attackers to some extent - his job is to head the ball clear if it comes into his zone, and that is it.

The problem is that our players don't seem to attack the ball when it comes into their zone, and are too easily distracted by attacking players' runs.

    Absolutely despise it, always have.

I know I'm not a professional - nor have I ever played at any devent level - but we were always told at local level "a bot of grass won't score against ye, so mark yer man!".

When we use a system that let Rosenberg get a free run at the ball for their first goal, you know it's a * failure.

I prefer a mixture of both tbh. Like we did under Martin O'Neill. Bobo and Mjallby to attack anything that came near the 6 yard box/penalty area, everyone else marking dangerous players.

It's a weird one, most teams
Now use it, but I've never heard any ex pro come
Out and say it works, it's as if managers force teams to use it.

You would think a goal has never been scored from a corner against man marking.

We have no proper defenders, thats why we will lose goals from set pieces, doesnt matter how tall you are if you dont instinctively know how to defend. Maybe we are better off going man marking as its less confusion for guys who are not good at defending but both systems have pros and cons.

Even Van Dijk isnt the best defender, hes just a good ball playing centre half with good distribution, if he could defend properly he would be worth 20-30m, I said that after seeing him for 10 minutes.

If he could defend then you are talking bordering on Hummels class.

Ideally we would have a Mjallby type next to him.

Wee Gord brought this in and I hate him for it. (although I do really love the wee guy, lol).

That and the 2 full-backs coming centrally to deal with crossballs.

Hate zonal marking. Most goals conceded from corners is because of it. Should be scrapped and go back to man marking.
