It's not really candid, he's just saying what we already know. It's not letting the cat out the bag that we are only really going to spend up to 2.5m on a player unless it is special deal. If you look back at our history over the past decade or so the Scot Brown transfer is by far the largest at 4.4. I'm sure PL would be willing to spend 8m if and when Messi becomes available...

Disheartening maybe, but depressing? I think that's too far... there's great value around in the 2.5m market too. And he does say 'in general'. I assume this is a flag up statement to clubs who's players we will go in for.

I happen to be fine with the buy low, sell high strategy. It's the most strategically competent avenue for clubs in leagues like ours. We can't get sucked onto the tow of other leagues like the EPL.

 

We know we're buying and developing talent, I'm not disputing that. My point was more, it shouldn't be an assistant scout discussing transfer fees and optimum times to sell players.

Obviously Lawell would never sanction an £8million transfer fee but my point was the chief exec should not be contradicted by an assistant scout.

Nor should he be the one declaring Virgil will be sold, as likely as it may seem at this point.

I didnt see the uproar and demand for managers, presidents, players etc to be dropped at Barcelona when we beat them. A team that probably cost more than 10x ours.

I disagree it can help in the negotiation. If they know your budget and you are up front and honest about it and most importantly they like you, it is possible to find a satisfactory compromise figure for most deals.

Lennon believes there have been mitigating circumstances behind the poor form of Boerrigter and feels it can often take players more than a season to find their feet when joining a big club.

He said: “He didn’t cost the money that has been quoted. He cost around £1million. I have seen quotes of £3m, that’s just ludicrous. It’s nowhere near that mark.

“It’s more frustrating for him than anyone else because of his injury situation. It has been a bit like James Forrest, although James has played more games.

“He gets in for a week and then is out. He has even had a couple of injuries in training that have kept him out.

“I think he will be more frustrated than anyone else with the way the season has gone.

“Some buys work for you and some don’t. You can’t judge them on one season.
