Scotland international rugby players face assault trial

Three Scotland international rugby players have appeared in court for allegedly attacking a rival player.

Glasgow Warriors Ryan Grant, 29, Ryan Wilson, 25 and Rory Hughes, 21, are charged with attacking Ally McLay, a Glasgow Hawk, on 27 October last year.

They are accused of assaulting Mr McLay at Barbeque Kings on Great Western Road in Glasgow.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, the three men pleaded not guilty to the charges they face. A trial is expected next month.

It is alleged that Mr Grant, from Hyndland, Glasgow, acting with Mr Wilson and Mr Hughes, punched Mr McLay on the face, knocked him to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked him on the face and body to his severe injury.

Mr Wilson, from Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, is accused of assaulting Gavin Quinn at the same place on the same day, by taking hold of his clothing, pulling him from a chair and placing his head in a head lock and struggling with him.

He faces another charge of assaulting Mr Quinn, along with Mr Hughes, from King's Park, Glasgow, by repeatedly punching him on the head.

Mr Hughes is also accused of breaching the peace.

I often laugh at the comparison of Rugby players being some sort of beacon of morality for footballers to aim for.

Mate, it would take but a picosecond to find some fairly serious incidents concerning footballers even just over the past couple of days:

Rape convict being released from jail
    Racism
    Footballer murdered in South Africa

Not condoning it but a wee good natured slap on a night out hardly registers on the richter scale of life. I coach kids at both football & rugby and I know what ones have the better attitude.

Criticising football for two things unrelated to football, yet ironically bringing up what rugby in that part of the world is really famous for*. Good old ruggers...

Senzo Meyiwa's murder had nothing to do with football. It happened miles away from any pitch in a horribly botched robbery.

As the great Paul Breitner said racism is an issue of society that manifests itself in football. Football, unlike Rugby**, really matters and so we throw more onto it than it can take. This is clear because racism shows it's ugly head in very divided societies (Brazil) or backwards societies (Russia) more than it does in societies that educate on race and colonialism and at least give mouth service to ending massive divides in wealth (Germany, England and Sweden). It isn't found across football everywhere.

    * Of course I can say the same for Rugby, about it be a problem of society manifesting itself onto the sport. The difference is that even if Stanley Rous supported South Africa FIFA still managed to boycott South Africa in 1963. Even Cricket (ICC) banned them in 1970 after the treatment of Basil D'Oliveira. The IRB kept South Africa a member throughout Apartheid.

** Football has the power to represent that only Basketball comes close too. You don't need any special kit; anyone can play as you don't need to be built like a house, you don't run a huge risk of injury, you can move anywhere and you can play the game in a way that represents your communities thinking. You can pass a lot and be creative; you can use attacking wingers and be straight to the point, you can counter-attack, tackle hard etc. There is an almost unlimited number ways in which you can move and play, unlike Rugby.

Repeated punching and kicking of a individual isn't a wee good natured slap on night out. That good natured it's went to court.

I'm not defending it, they'll get what they deserve - if found guilty. Do you think they should set a better example just because they're rugby players?

I was highlighting that there are better examples of people that play other sports who do stupid things when off duty.

It's been a fair old while since rugby could be deemed a sport played only by gentlemen.

Beacon of morality? Nah, but they're better disciplined when playing, that's all.

@31B404, I wasn't criticising football for anything in the same way that this incident is unrelated to rugby, unless they've started playing it in restaurants on the Boulevard.
