I deal with School teachers/lawyers/accountants/Judges/managers/doctors etc (you think of a profession and I likely deal with them). I usually meet them at their homes after work and the amount that drink a bottle of wine/drink every night is frightening being honest. I would estimate that at least 30% of these people can be termed "functioning alcoholics".

Regarding your mate, can you not just drink coffee/soft drinks when you meet up ?
If I was you, I would speak to your mate as well about the amount he drinks. Although I would be prepared for a frosty response sadly.

Are you a male escort?Aye, should maybe drink more cokes. Problem is that is much quicker and gets the rounds out of sync. Plus I want to save some money too, and half the time nowadays he just stares at his smartphone.

I don't think we should confuse one evening a week going a bit overboard even if its every week with multiple nights a week. For example what Donal does is probably what most of us do, maybe not drinking playing games but some other event or thing.

When it turns from something that happens once a week into a couple of times a week then it becomes a problem as that shows a dependancy.

I would have went to the bar and drank 4 nights a week from the age of 18-24. And I've also enjoyed few drinks in the house. But now I'm 31 and married with two kids. And I hardly go out and truth be told couldn't afford 25% of the social life I had. I don't drink in the house at all, it bores me.

But the flip side is I smoke green every night. Might only be one smoke sometimes two but I believe it's substituted the drink.

Binge drinking is probably just as bad, if not worse. I think a fair few of us will be guilty of that. That said, when we're playing like we played at the weekend, it's probably excusable. :smiley-laughing002:

I love booze so * much! but always keep an eye on it so that being able to stop is still a decision that can be made....would be devestated to be told you cant have a drink again.

With your mate though, yeah does sound like its got him by the baws.

Thing is though, and this is a strong personal opinion............booze and * isn't addictive, Its habitual. He has gotten into a habit that is * him up.

Excellent advice earlier from one of the guys; keep the meet ups but insist you change the pattern and suggest other * like gym, boxing or whatever is your *.

I used to drink quite a bit when i was younger but over the last few years i've cut right down, got fed up with the hangovers from * lol and just feeling knackered all the time.

Just the odd tipple now and again is enough, no beers just a few cognac's and that's it.

I know two of them, one I used to work with a guy about 45 and the others my das aunty.

The guy I used to work with drank every day from when he got up, since has become sober(ish I think he still goes out for the odd pint at the weekend now) after he thought he was dying, drank half a bottle of whiskey at about 7am one morning during the summer before work and had an alcoholic seizure where he went unconcious I think in his toilet and his wife and weans kicked the door in to find him lying there foaming at the mouth.

My das aunty is less of an alky than that but still an alky, she drinks vodka all day even at work but not to get drunk, you wouldnt know she was an alky yet she'd probably drink half a litre of vodka before most * have had their lunch lol everyday

If it was me i'd tell him the truth of what you actually think, then you and he will both know what you actually think and take whatever comes from it. * can always tell when you're lying imo and it only makes things worse, if you just try and give him excuses for me you should always be honest about everything unless nothing needs to be said.

Thats the only way people always know you're 100% serious and whatever about stuff and then they will either like you more for it or you don't want to be hanging about with them anyway.

Tell your mate straight what you think, he probably knows it, needs to hear it, want's to hear it for his own wellbeing, but wont like hearing it...but it'll still be the right thing for everyone to do
