Was at the shelter today and it was largely older dogs (4+)that had been abandoned or rescued. Spoke to some of the staff that basically said this type of dog would be better for an experienced dog owner as many have suffered neglect/abuse and as a result might prove to be handful for first time owners.

Sorry not read the whole post..but my wife's a behaviorist and spends alot of time dealing with problem dogs.
We also board dogs and have probably had at least 400 through the house.
Stay away from collie's ..high percentage have issues that never really get resolved.
Spaniels ...alot of freaky ones about..again ..it's in the blood.
(I'm not saying all of the above are bad..they're not)
    Staffies....generally awesome dogs..pretty much bulltproof..
However when those jaws go bad..:-/

Dont presume that love and affection can cure a dog from rescue...some were just bad in the first place...some have been shuffled about so much they may never make good pets..
Dont presume that the folk working they're have any great
    EXpertise...they dont.
Never buy the one you feel sorry for ,cos it's cowering at the back.
Buy the wagging moron that's trying to lick your face off.

If you've got ..or are expecting children...think very long and hard about what you are buying.

German shepherds are generally excellent...although people will cross the road and pick up small children/dogs when they see you.

I know a good few have warned against Jack Russell Terriers but arranged to visit a farm later in the week who are selling puppies. Done a lot of reading and I know they are yappy attention seekers but with the right training they can be great family dogs. So if all goes well I'd expect to have a Jack Russell by the end of the month.

Not a good start..a farm that is..
    I'd have a good look about....if poss..
Ask to see the mother...other pups etc

Ask about locally ..see if there are any rumours.. regards
    Puppy farming.
Take everything they say with a pinch of salt...puppy farmers have plenty practice of covering things up.
A good breeder should be checking you out as well..

Sorry if this is'nt applicable in your situation, but i've seen plenty of people dragged through * and back trying to deal
With these dogs and they're issues

Most of them havent got a hope from day one...the conditions
They are born/raised in and the health (mental health) of the mother all make it likely they will suffer major problems

All depends on price, time you have free to walk it and let it * ect.
Labradors are always a sound bet.
Jack Russels need A LOT of walking and care.

When I say a farm I mean a working farm rather than a puppy farm. Also they have both parent dogs for us to meet.

As i said if you know these folk then fair enough...
But being a working farm does'nt really make any difference.
No-one freely admits to running a puppy farm and somewhere
With lots of scattered outhouses and sheds is
EXactly the kind of place you'd expect to find one.

Dont mean to go on but my missus sees at least 3 people a week who thought they were buying a carefully bred pup.
And subsequently run into huge vet bills /mentally f**ked up dogs and heartbreaking decisions

Not at all mate, all advice is welcome. When we head up on Thurs I have plenty of questions to ask and won't be making any rash decisions.

Generally speaking russels are cracking dogs..
Obviously...they will chase cats and try to eat parrots ,budgie's
    Ect
For whatever you end up with..a good ( recommended by more than one vet)
Training class is worth going to as soon as possible...
First few months of a pup's life set it up for the rest of life.

Yeah read a lot of negative stuff about Jack Russell's but with the right training early on it will make all the difference. Will let you know what we end up with. Thanks again for the advice.

German shotrhaired pointer. Fantastic athletes, impeccable nature and unbelievably intelligent and loyal.

Need a lot of walking but you will never regret it. Beautiful animals.

    As above. German Shorthaired pointer.

Wonderfully intelligent, athletic and loyal and have the best nature of any dog I've ever encountered.
