You're missing a player, stick Alonso in there.

Most overrated threads in any forum, similar to controversial opinions thread in any forum, end up like this... it ends up getting way way over the top and some of the opinion are just ridiculous.

Welbeck and Crouch aside, three other players have at some point done the job at the very top level.

Owen was brilliant in his teenage years for both Liverpool and England, Ferdinand was up for most part of his career great at the back and Rooney proved himself lots of times so far.

I don't understand this "hyped up by the media" stuff, surely you can draw your own conclusions without listening to pundits/commentators/journalists, it's their job to do it. In every league, it's not just England.

David Beckham .. by a country mile.

If he looked like Luke Chadwick he would have never had the career he did.

Good crosser, passer and free-kick hitter .. big wow!

Gasgoine is, by far, the biggest ever myth created by the media. He had a good season, maybe a season and a half, at the beginning of his career and was utter dross everywhere after that except in Scotland (again maybe).

He became a poster boy for England at the 1990 WC (where he was average at best) and even though they got to the semi final, England were * as well. He let it go to his head and imo its why he has the mental problems he has. He needed a manager that could protect and shield him from it but never got one.

If there was ever an "on his day" player, its him. His days though were as common as rocking horse *.

I saw enough of him to form my own opinion nothing to do
    with the media hype.
I think after his (self inflicted) injury he lost some of his initial burst of speed that I think all great midfield players have.
But he was still head & shoulders above any other creative midfielder in England, even further afield he was as good or better than many other international players.
I agree with the bit about a manager.
I think Fergie would have been great for him.

    Gazza was very very talented.
A tad overrated by the media, but not a over rated player.

I often ask people to recollect his key moments from that world cup, which is usually him smelling the refs armpit and crying like a big * girl when he got booked in the semi final.

England blagged their way through that tournament, winning one game, against * super-power 'Egypt' in the group stages, squeezing past Belgium in the worst game in world cup history in the second round and getting out of jail with 2 penalties against mighty Cameroon.

They were carried by Lineker, Beardsley and David Platt, who were genuinely class players that shunned the media, unlike that *.

He was a 'good' player, nothing more.
