*.... shame he never go to play with Paddy McCourt.:54:

    Imagine a team of....

    Forster
    Lustig Van Dijk Ambrose Izzy
    Ki Wanyama
    McGeady McCourt Stokes
    Hooper

The quality of football that team could potentially come up with would be unbelievable.

We'll never keep guys like this for long if we don't invest some money in our squad on actual quality. If we had a goalscorer and a creative midfielder I think we could actually compete in the CL group stages, then guys like Virgil may want to stay a bit longer.

Would rather put in Brown or Ledley, always found Ki a bit frustrating.

The days are gone of quality staying in Scotland at their peaks, money just isnt here.

10-12 year ago, we could actually afford the same wages as teams like Everton, Spurs and Newcastle. Now they dwarf us. Our highest paid player probably would even come in the top 15 highest paid at clubs like them.

What happened to Scottish football? I know that the huns going bust had an affect on it, but it was going down hill even then.

Yeah but I don't think it's all about money for everyone, if Van Dijk was surrounded by a few decent players and we were doing ok in the CL, he'd probably be enjoying his football as opposed to being surrounded by players he's obviously a cut above. If we show some desire and ambition to compete well in the CL group stages more players will be willing to stay.

The big man won't be with us for long so might as well enjoy it while hes here and hope that some of his class rubs off on the others round about him.

Hope I'm wrong as * though!

Forget about English football. English football has nothing to do with the game here. Financial mismanagement by a number of clubs have put this league in the mess it is.

No, English football is the reason. The best players in England came to Scotland when English clubs were banned from Europe. This gave Scottish football a wee bubble of quality and when SKY came in they injected huge amounts of money. Players moved back to England when the ban ended and the money got less and less and then the only level of competition to make it slightly exciting died along with oldco. I like Scottish football though, I think people expect it to be way more than it possibly can be.

    English football happened lol

10 years ago we spoke about the £20million TV money they got when we only got £2million. But our better ticket and merchandise sales always made up for the likes of Newcastle and Spurs getting more TV money, now we need to get into the Champions League every single year to even get close to them and hope they dont get into Europe at all - even then we're still poorer than them.

Now we still get £2million but they all get £60million.

Its quite funny actually that Celtic are Live on TV about 25 times a season, just in domestic football usually 21/22 League games and 2-5 Cup games yet from it all we only get about £2.5million in total. When a Club like Hull can be live on TV 5/6 times a season and get £60million.

Bottom half English clubs like Crystal Palace and Cardiff can afford to spend £6million on a player and pay them £40k a week without thinking too much about it when we couldnt do that, or we could but if we * it up and bought a diddy it would be a disaster, for them it wouldnt really matter as they're playing with money they'd never have had in the Championship.

tbh we won't keep guys like this due to the SPL. The league needs better structure and investment. Could throw 50k p/w to these guys but the standard is pish. CL is just not enough for some.

    * shame coz if we had the same investment as the diddies in England then we'd * on them.

But back to big Virgil......Major man love towards that man.

    SPLOODGE!!!!!!!

Even though we can't compete to the EPL in financial terms, the SPFL players coming through are looking decent. Dundee are looking like a decent side with plenty of youngsters. But on a celtic point, its gonna take a couple of we want to get on the EPL's wages level. We all might not be happy with the ammount of spending right now but in hindsight, if we continue to accumulate money for seasons to come, we'll be in a steady financial ship cruising along the clyde ;) my point being that we will continue to buy more expensive players as the years go on. It won't be a considerate boost but at least move up in the ammount of wages we can pay. If we continue to get CL football, we will increase the reputation of the club making us a more attractive team to sign for. If you look at the transfers we did last summer, we spent more money than we have done previously. Might take a couple of agonizing years but I think we might start to get up there wage wise with some CL quality players.

That hasn't helped your right but English football being on our doorstep and sky has crippled our game..

English football has always been on our door so that shouldn't really be an excuse as our game back then had many successful clubs with hundreds playing in England for all the big sides so the introduction of sky and what others get more importantly compared to our game has killed us..

The really frustrating thing about SKY is that there will be ALOT more Celtic supporting subscribers than the likes of the Hull's, Sunderland's, Swansea's, Fulham's etc fans do.

In a nutshell, Celtic fans subscription money goes to EPL football and these little teams who spend big money now.

Really don't understand why Celtic put up with the measly sum they receive, Celtic could make a better return of money from their own avenues instead of bowing to SKY's pathetic excuse of a deal.

rangers crippled our game. Our media's * sucking to rangers helped kill our game.
Yes Scottish football isn't the best, but the huns ruined bringing through talent, the SFA holding hands (and the media) the huns helped also.

Sky was a major factor. But Murray destroyed Scottish football.

Again off topic there so.......All hail Virgil van Dijk:celt_2:

    Signings

We should be sticking to the best youths in Scotland as our new signing policy,
Forget the epl , will not happen . Build up our squad full of Scottish youngsters and mix with experience for the time being . Then a couple of seasons at first team level we can make a proper fist of a Champions league campaign .
We should not be tossing millions away in transfers , if the youths are good enough they will play , forget any player using us as a stepping stone !
Big spends are gone for a few years so let's go on an honest lad willing to make the grade .
