FOS gets murdered constantly by folk singing it at half speed.

Opposite problem from A Soldier's Song, which is sounds better slow, and often gets played too fast...

It's not the worst song but I'm sure someone could think of something a lot better. It's even worse when you get idiots singing it at the start of a game. For example, amy macdonald's version was one of the worst thing's i've ever heard in my life.

I think Amhrán na bhFiann sounds grand at any tempo.

Quick and rousing or languid and mournful, either way it's top notch.

This video illustrates my view, great as a folk song but not as an anthem.

I dont mind it, and I dont think it is anymore "Xenophobic, shortbread tin *" than a lot of other national anthems.

I dont really understand what Cwm Rhondda has to do with Wales other than it was written in Wales? I would rather have an anthem at least connected to the country in question.

Nothing beats the Star Spangled Banner in my opinion!

I actually quite like the song.

Although it shouldn't be allowed to be sung at football matches. And supporters should be arrested if caught.

I agree its not that bad though it can sound a bit dreary. Can I also add that anything sung by that wee boot is * horrendous

That's a lot of * nonsense. It commemorates the Wars Of Independence like many national anthems do. It's not even remotely xenophobic, in fact, in case there was any confusion, it states 'those days are past now'. It's a song about how a nation as small as Scotland managed to resist the oppression of a world super power, something we should be immensely proud of.

And before you jump the gun and say 'be respectful when debating' like you did to another poster, you've just called our national anthem a '* embarrassment'. :bbpd:

On the subject of alternatives my preference would be Highland Cathedral or Caledonia (my favourite of the lot, but not sure it's national anthem material) assuming Flower of Scotland is out of the equation.

It's utter dross! A dirge! I FAR preferred Scotland The Brave..

    Land of my high endeavour,
    Land of the shining river,
Land of my heart for ever...
    SCOTLAND THE BRAVE.

Personally though, I'd love someone to set some meaningful words to Highland Cathedral, speed it up a bit and adopt it as our anthem (and yes, I know the tune has German origins, but so what!).

Not sure if anyone's posted it but the Royal Scottish National Orcchestra did a poll on the subject:

    Flower of Scotland - 41%
    Scotland the Brave - 29%
    Highland Cathedral - 16%
    A Man's A Man for A' That - 7%
    Scots Wha Hae - 6%

Can't believe Scotland the Brave came second. Far too cheery for a national anthem. :smiley-laughing002:
