why? Russell is proven in our league, scores goals, would give everything everytime he stepped on the field, and is cheap. Unless you are a regularly watching the porteguese league I can't see why you would rather Balde, a striker who seems to have bounced around alot, doesn't seem to score, and from his quotes seems to be a bit of a */potential dressing room cancer.

Not to mention he would cost more than double what Russell is going for according to reports.

    Has this been posted yet?

    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/...s/celtic-make-last-ditch-attempt-sign-1934839

CELTIC last night made a last-ditch move to sign Dundee United hitman Johnny Russell.

The Tannadice club have accepted a bid from Derby County for Russell who is due to travel to Pride Park on Monday to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms.

But Record Sport understands Celtic have now officially entered the race for the sought-after striker and appear to be favourites to land him.

Italian Serie A outfit Catania and Reading are also in the chase but Neil Lennon is in pole position to keep the player in the SPL. The Celtic boss is determined to hijack the Rams’ move by tempting Russell with a lucrative offer and the chance to be part of his team’s Champions
    League campaign.

United accepted a bid of around £750,000 for the 23-year-old, who has a year of his contract to run, and discussions are continuing with his representatives, Viola FC.

A United spokesman confirmed Derby’s intention to seal the deal.

He said: “The transfer is expected to be concluded after the player has completed the
    necessary formalities early next week.”

But Celtic are now in the driving seat to snap up a player Lennon once tried to sign for £500,000.

    It's been posted.

Is it a fact that Lennon tried to sign him for 500k?

It would be strange to miss out on a player over 250k when we're likely to lose our leading goalscorer this year.

we don't need any more squad players, versatile this, flexible that, we need players who are gonna come in and improve the starting 11, would Russell do this? its a no imo

With wanyama and hooper leaving, and gershon, rogne, lassad, miku, mccourt etc allready away we DO need more squad players, and if they are versatile thats all the better. We could have had russell for 750k and he can cover 4 positions ( striker, behind the striker and both wings ). The fact it seems like we havent bothered targeting him is shocking and a bit daft.

Why is everyone acting like this is dead? It definitely isn't. I think at 750k it'd be criminal to let a good prospect go down south to some * team.

He played up-front versus Helsingborg,Helsinki,Barca and Benfica away and went up-front (and scored) versus Spartak when we were a man up.

With each day that goes by, I become more and more convinced that we're likelier to see Bertrand Russell sign this summer than Johnny.

It's maybe just the timing. We've been trying to sign two other guys, then Russell gets rushed out the door. At the same time we're trying to get Stokes on a new deal.

Lenny is travelling around on holiday watching players, things are happening.

If it was nearer the end of the window and we hadn't signed someone, Stokes went elsewhere and Hooper left i'm sure we'd be more likely to have moved for Russell.

It might turn out as a blessing, it might turn out to be daft, we'll just have to wait and see.

Samaras was wide left in every game you have mentioned. Because we played 4-5-1 in every European game and Hooper started every one you mentioned. He might have got put through the middle away in Moscow when they went down to 10 but he was not played as a striker that night, or any night in Europe.

Only problem if it all goes sour is the Scottish mentality to slate the SPL signing in a 'told you so' style.

At least with a foreign import - especially a pretty obscure one - the average fan knows little (or nothing!) about them in the first place, so there's unlikley to be the same reaction if they don't cut the mustard. They just slip back into obscurity with a faint murmuring of discontent at the money wasted.

    What nonsense.

We played 2 up-front in the qualifiers and only went 4-5-1 to kill off the games. We played Hooper off Samaras Vs Barcelona and did the same Vs Benfica.

If you think Hooper played just off Samaras in the Nou Camp then you were watching a different game. Hooper was played as a lone striker and Samaras was wide left before coming off injured. We didn't play two up top in qualifiers either. We played 4-5-1 in Europe all season. Samaras was wide left in both games v Helsinki.
