Definitely a target man. A Hartson or Sutton type player, who can win balls in the air to link up with the small, speedy forward. Murphy should be ideal for this, but he doesn't really manage it. Sammy should fit this mould also, but seems to think he's the nippy, running striker who moves around the box rather than the target man who's always in the middle. That's part of the reason we did so well with Henrik alongside Hartson/Sutton. They were so strong, won every ball in the air and were always there to recieve and link up with Henrik. It was the same with Skippy and JVOH.
In theory I think Rasmussen could be just the sort of player we're looking for; a real aerial threat who gets himself in the box. From what I saw of him under TM you can rely on him to be in the right place at the right time. Needs to work harder though.

+1, for when we travel on ugly days to play ugly teams on ugly pitches we may need to revert to route one football, hence the need for a monster to bully centre backs.

the motherwell loss last season was the match where we lost the league in my opinion, games in those conditions will come up this season and we need a suitable team to play route one football and grind out the 3 points.

Rasmussen-what the * happened with him? I'd love to hear WHY we buy players then don't play them.

I also don't think Murphy has done much wrong when he's played. He's not a balls-out striker but has shown he is capable of doing a job at some level (St Johnstone away last season).

I agree with the majority here. We need a physical aerial player who is also high scoring. We have always had players like that JVOH, Hartson, Sutton, Van Hojdonk, Cadette, Viduka. Even Larsson had that in his game as well as other stuff. We have an obsession with wingers but no really good aerial players who are natural scorers. We badly need such a player IMO. Problem is they are hard to find or very expensive. At one time I hoped Sheridan might have come through and saved us a fortune but that wasnt to be.

Days are gone when we can sign an EPL target man. A better parallel would be the bargain that JVOH or Pierre Van Hoijdonk who were less pricey and less well known in Britain. Or A Viduka who I think was under the radar of the English clubs. Holland strikes we as a place where there seems to be tall strikers.

A Kevin Kyle type player. Someone who will bully defenders, put himself about and allow others to feed off him.
