[IMG]Chancellor Gordon BrownLONDON (Reuters) - Britons should not shy away from showing more patriotism because it would help create a more defined sense of what it means to be British in the modern world, Chancellor Gordon Brown said on Saturday.

Speaking at a meeting of Labour supporters, Brown called on Britons to "embrace the Union flag", a symbol which has become increasingly associated with the far right or hooligans.

"We should assert that the Union flag is a flag for tolerance and inclusion," Brown, widely tipped to succeed Tony Blair as prime minister within the next couple of years, said.

"All the United Kingdom should honour it, not ignore it; and we should assert that the Union flag is a flag for tolerance and inclusion."

Brown floated the idea of creating a national day as a way of unifying the country, seen as a more pressing need after the July suicide bombings in London when four British Muslims killed themselves and 52 others.

"We have to face uncomfortable facts that while the British response to July 7 was remarkable, they were British citizens, British born apparently integrated into our communities, who were prepared to maim and kill fellow British citizens irrespective of their religion."

The chancellor also said having a clear view of being British would help the country define its national identity.

He said that while Britain did not have the sort of iconic symbols of patriotism seen in the United States, such as the July 4, Independence Day celebrations and the Stars and Stripes flag often seen flying outside people's homes, there were options for Britain.

He said the Remembrance Day commemorations when Britons remember their war dead could come to be seen as a "British Day".

I respect Celtic's Irish Roots, and Would be proud to be irish if i was. But i'm Scottish, So i'd rather celebrate a day about where i'm from. I wouldn't go out of my way to celebrate a day to a country where i've not even been to.

Exactly what I was thinking, if it gets me a day of school, then i'll be quite happy with it. Don't see what everyones problem with it is, if you don't want to celebrate it, don't, take the day off and stop moaning. A day off is a day off:fear:
