So today in St Andrews a beautiful young red squirrel ran out near the old course on to the road in front of my car. I missed it! It also made it across towards the Uni Campus.

What is it with me and rodents running in front of my car?

Why can’t a Sevconian run in front of my car? (Correction - waddle or wobble or crawl in front of my car)

Was out for a walk around one of the local hills today . I saw a Shrew scurrying from one hedgerow across a track to another . Although it was a nice day with good visibility , and I only passed three other walkers , that was the only wildlife I saw .

Had a day off today so went for a longish walk from home with a pal who has is an all-rounder on wildlife, and is currently keen on butterflies. The fields and footpaths were teeming with them! We saw plenty of Marbled White, Cabbage White, Painted Lady, Dark Green Fritillary, Red Admiral, Ringlet, Small Heath, Chalk Hill Blue, Small Skipper, Gatekeeper, Speckled Wood. We've planned a woodland walk next week to see what the different habitat brings. Very enjoyable day!

We saw some interesting bird species today too. My pal said the call we heard at one point was a Quail. The sound was coming from a field with a tall crop in it so not much chance of seeing it, as they are pretty small. We waited for about half an hour and no luck. However he has an app on his phone that plays birdsong, and he played the Quail call. After a couple of minutes it appeared at the edge of the field to see what was going on. It was like something out of Springwatch!

That's interesting cidermaster, I hadn't realised that the Marbled White was localised to the south. I've just looked it up and yes it doesn't seem to get further north than Glamorganshire in Wales. The countryside round our town is chalk downland, so there's a good chance of seeing most of the blue butterflies. I've just read that there's a good site for Adonis Blue within walking distance from home, so I'll go and look for that when they are due in flight in August. I absolutely never thought I'd see the day when I started to go out butterfly spotting!

Yes Chalk Downland is indeed amazing habitat for Blue Butterflies, other Butterflies and loads of other Wildlife. I have a friend who lives right next to this habitat and sees what you see.
Mind you it’s not to bad up here near Llandudno,I normally get around 26 species of Butterfly on my local patch was high year and have a colony of Purple Hairstreak in my garden and a colony of White Lettered Hairstreak in Woodland very near my house.
Yes Butterfly spotted is good for the mind and soul. Lots of lovely walks and of course you see all the other Wildlife as well.

So I saw an oyster catcher on a small central reservation on a road in Cumbernauld today, bizarre.

Very bizarre. Cumbernauld isn't renowned for its birds.
