Celtic have asked to have this promoted on our forum with the latest details as of 6pm today.

STILIYAN Petrov and James Milner got together at Paradise today to promote 'A Match For Cancer', the fantastic fundraising match which will take place at Celtic Park next month.

'A Match for Cancer', sponsored by Dafabet, will take place at Celtic Park on Saturday, September 8, 2018 (KO: 2pm) – and will see the Celtic legend and current Liverpool midfielder pull together opposing squads from the worlds of football and entertainment.

Every penny raised will be devoted to tackling cancer through three equal beneficiary charities - Celtic FC Foundation, The Stiliyan Petrov Foundation and The James Milner Foundation.

Stiliyan, who has bravely battled through leukaemia since being diagnosed in 2012, highlighted the incredible backing he received from the Celtic family. He said: “The support that my family and I have received from the Celtic fans over these past few years has been truly amazing, I cannot thank them enough.

“When we held the #19 Legends charity match back in 2013 to help raise funds for my Foundation, they came in their numbers and showed the world how special this place is and how special the Celtic support is. The reception that my family and I received that day was absolutely incredible and the Celtic support have continued to give me just as warm a welcome every time I see them.

“Our goal from this match is to help children and adults with cancer – and their families - to tackle the journey through diagnosis and treatment towards what we hope will be a positive outcome. It is a very special cause.”

For James Milner, the decision to head north to Celtic Park was easy. He explained: “Obviously Stan and I played together at Aston Villa so I know very well his fight against leukaemia. We were talking about Stan’s Foundation and mine doing something together and the idea of a match came up. The obvious choice was Celtic.

“Stan told me what a great club they are and how everything is organised to the highest level by Celtic FC Foundation. We also know how fanatical the fans are and how they support charity. I know what a big club it is – and not just because of my team-mate at Liverpool, Andrew Robertson - because I have talked down the years with people who have played for the Hoops.”

Celtic FC Foundation is delighted to confirm the first two cancer charity partners it will work with to make a positive difference to patients and their families.

Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity - the Schiehallion Ward.
The Ward was named after the mountain - Schiehallion - to mirror the journey for children with cancer. The charity recognises that it’s an uphill struggle, but also that you can walk a path with lots of people who will get you to the top. They provide a range of support services to help children during that journey.

    Beatson Cancer Charity
The charity supports people affected by cancer, every step of the way. They make the journey easier by transforming the way cancer care is funded and delivered. They provide services, as well as funding specialists, research and education to invest in a better future for cancer patients and their families.

The James Milner Foundation, set up around the time of Stiliyan’s diagnosis, has Bloodwise, the charity that combats blood cancer, as one of its major beneficiaries.

Tickets for 'A Match for Cancer' are now on general sale, on a first come, first served basis – maximum of 10 per person - priced at £14 for adults and £6 for concessions*.

Tickets are available to purchase online at www.celticfc.net, by calling 0871 226 1888** or by visiting the Celtic Ticket Office. The lower tier will be on sale in the first instance and Rail Seating does not apply to this match.

Premium tickets (£30) and corporate packages (£135) are also available by calling 0871 226 1888** (Option 4) or emailing matchdayhospitality@celticfc.co.uk

Celtic FC Foundation will also be hosting a fundraising dinner – An Evening with Petrov and Milner - the night before the match, on Friday, September 7. This will take place in the Kerrydale Suite at Celtic Park.

Joining Stiliyan and James on the night will be a host of representatives from both charity match squads.

Tickets are priced at £700 for a table of 10 or £70 per person and can booked via email cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk or telephone 0141 551 4321.

Mirroring the match, net proceeds of the dinner will be devoted to tackling cancer through Celtic FC Foundation (SC024648), The Stiliyan Petrov Foundation (1154131) and The James Milner Foundation (1146768).

    * Concessions 65+/Under 16s.

** Calls cost 13p per minute, plus your phone company’s access charge. Booking fees apply online and via our sales line.

Top tier has been closed for this and a quick look online shows they're really struggling to sell tickets for the lower tiers too. Awful pity really.

Things like this are better in the off season IMO and would generate more interest when there's an appetite for some football.

It's September and we're in the thick of it with many having forked out for 3 rounds of Euro qualifiers already. With kids going back to school etc, the timing really isn't ideal

Yeah pretty much sums it up mate.

Great cause, of course, but it’s not really a priority at the minute. Even a fiver a skull I doubt it would sell out.

We should do a big charity game every couple of years, similar to that one Robbie Williams organises at Wembley.

Jurgen Klopp: I'm looking forward to Celtic Park charity match

JURGEN Klopp is looking forward to getting his first taste of Paradise when he takes charge of James Milner’s squad for the forthcoming ‘Match For Cancer’ charity game on Saturday, September 8 (KO: 2pm), against a Stiliyan Petrov select, managed by Celtic boss, Brendan Rodgers.

Celtic, of course, is a famous name in world football, and the Liverpool manager is well aware of Celtic Park’s reputation as one of the best arenas in the game. But with so many connections between Celtic and Liverpool, he’s already well-versed on how important the team is to its supporters, including a couple of his own players.

“Actually I cannot wait to come to Celtic Park,” the Liverpool boss told the official Celtic website. “Being someone who loves football and it’s traditions, it is very difficult to ignore a club like Celtic. It is a club, in quite an elite group I would say, where it doesn’t matter where you go in the world, there is always a very good chance you will see or meet someone who is either a Celtic fan directly or has an affiliation or a sense of belonging to the club.

“I have never been to a game at Celtic – doing a derby game is actually on my bucket list – but for now I think the experience of being involved with this game will be enough to at least see and feel what Celtic Park and the club is all about.

“Liverpool has so many close connections as club, not least at this moment that Brendan Rodgers is doing such a fantastic job as your manager. Kenny Dalglish likewise always tells me how special the connection is.

“I also have two members of my team at the moment who are always glued to the TV at our training ground when Celtic play, in Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson. Virgil is an ex-Celtic player, of course, but Robbo is just a massive, massive Celtic fan.

“So I get to hear lots about Celtic. In Robbo’s case, he talks constantly about it, even when you don’t ask, and all I hear is that it is a special club that has a lot of heart and soul. So I’m really looking forward to getting my own experience of this.”

Can anyone recommend a good seat in the lower stands?

Will be buying tickets for my dads birthday. Will be area 107 but unsure how close or far back to go. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I feel around about the midsection is probably best, too near the front and you don't get a good view of the overall game. Plus, if it rains, the front isn't much fun.

    Yep agree with Marie.

I'd go right up to the very back row DD. Great view from there.
The corporate folk in the 'Club Celtic' padded seats are in the rows just behind you. If it's good enough for them :50:

IT is his first game in Scotland, but Hristo Stoichkov is determined to leave behind more than memories. The Bulgarian superstar, nicknamed 'The Boss' in the original Barcelona Dream Team, will play at Celtic Park next Saturday, September 8, in ‘A Match for Cancer’, sponsored by Dafabet and Laduma.

But he brings more than his substantial presence. He has both a message and an opportunity for fans.

“First, this is not a big deal for me in the sense of giving up time and travelling. It is my duty,” Stoichkov said. “I have won a Ballon D’Or (1994), the Golden Shoe as the top scorer in the World Cup in 1994, a European Cup, but people are more important. Supporting your friends and others is important.

“Second, I have no idea how much money Celtic FC Foundation will raise, but I tell you this, I am going to present my boots and jersey from 1992 and my national jersey from 1994 to raise funds for this cause.”

The gift from 1992 comes from his appearance in the European Cup final where he played for Barcelona in the victory over Sampdoria at Wembley. The national jersey comes from a World Cup tournament where Bulgaria reached the semi-finals.

They are significant signs of the regard that he holds for Stiliyan Petrov and of his belief that it is the duty of footballers to help charity.

“This is very important for me. It is an important game too,” he said. “Stiliyan is not only one of my players, he is one my friends. I call him one of my players because he played under me when I was coach at the national team.”

Stoichkov was shocked by his fellow countryman's diagnosis of leukaemia, and is convinced that ‘the family of football’ can help sufferers and their families.

“The difficulties Stiliyan had impacted on him and his family but also on his friends," he said. "It is my obligation to be at this game and also the fundraising dinner the night before. It is a duty. It is very important for everyone to bring these issues to light.

“When Stiliyan calls and asks me to play, it is simple. The answer is short. I am coming. I live in Miami, but no big deal. I have to be there.

“I have never played in Scotland. I have never played at Celtic Park but I know the history, I know it is one of the biggest teams in the world. I know the reputation of the fans and I have watched them against Barcelona. My presence is to show support to someone I have known for more than 20 years.”

Stiliyan Petrov was coming to the fore in Bulgaria as Hristo Stoichkov was finishing his career.

“He was one of some great talents who left the country for big clubs at that time – Dimitar Berbatov, Stiliyan, Martin Petrov," said Stoichkov. "I am very happy that I played a small part in these young players coming through. Stiliyan had such great moments in his career, such great success. He had character as a player and a man. Stiliyan knows he was privileged to play for Celtic – a club with such a history. But he was a big man for them.

“I don’t like to speak of my career. I never spoke soccer, I played soccer.” Stoichkov continued. “Yes, I played for Bulgaria and Barcelona and won trophies but that was not just down to me. It was because of other players and the coaches. I don’t like this stuff where players say ‘I scored this goal, scored this free-kick, I won this’. There were always others.”

And he picked out Johan Cruyff as the greatest influence on his career.

“I was very happy to play under him for the Dream Team.” he said of the Barcelona side that won the European Cup and four La Liga titles under the Dutchman. “I left Bulgaria when I was young. I went to a different culture, different system.

“Under Cruyff it was very hard work. He trained us to the limit. He was the best coach in history because of his mentality and the way he gave you responsibility.

But he shies away from any comparison of that Barca team with the 1990s and Messi-led one of recent times. “It is not fair. It is enough to say I love Barca.” he said.

But he says of a team that included Romario, Pep Guardiola, Ronald Koeman, Michael Laudrup and Gheorge Hagi: “They were true greats. From Monday to Friday, we worked on the training field. But on match day it was a big party on the pitch.”

And Stoichkov promises a similar party on Saturday, September 8. At 52, he will be leading the celebrations.

“I could play for three days never mind 90 minutes. It is no big deal.” he says.

It will be for those privileged to watch the Scottish debut of an all-time world great.
