    There's three on the shortlist.

Depending on how those talks goes, it could descend to 4, 5, 6, 7, who knows at this stage.
Who is up for the challenge ?.

Send him in with brass knuckles on fake talks with the board, only for him to repeat the Marinakis scene.

IMHO, the inclusion of O'Neill only makes sense if they're thinking of giving it to Maloney long term.

Im not saying I can’t see it happening but why do you think that? Surely if O’Neill is in the dugout for this spell it’s hard to say, “Okay things are going well, so Martin will be chucking it and we’ll go with his assistant” ..?

Folk just like there wild conspiracy pish. The 2 are clearly here to settle us a few weeks while they get a proper candidate in. Fact were so short on players, a big budget so will be spent believe it or not, we are an attractive option for someone to fast track build there own team.

Don't know if he would come back but I'll be incredibly disappointed if we haven't at least asked the question by this weekend.

I tend to think Maloney wouldn’t want the job like this anyway. Has he ever gave any indication he’s up for the job?

Obviously I’ve no idea but I think it’s more likely he sees this as a chance to position himself as the next assistant manager.

Maloney shouldn't be anywhere near the shortlist, failed everywhere he's been

    Lots of reasons.

The biggest reason is that Maloney already knows how to coach a team and at this stage, will know a lot more about modern tactics and coaching methods than O'Neill. If he's just taking the team for a few weeks until the new manager comes in, then he really doesn't need MON as a mentor. It doesn't make sense. However, if he's here for longer, then it makes perfect sense. He will have no idea how to manage a club the size of Celtic and everything that goes with it and will very much need an experienced mentor.

That's the main reason that I feel confident about, although I can also speculate (with less confidence) about other possible advantages the board might see:

Imagine you put him in without O'Neill. His achievements in management are non-existent, so the slightest suggestion that he will be the long-term manager will be seen by the support for what it is: a massive downgrade on Rodgers. O'Neill's name at the head calms those fears enough to buy the board time, as nobody thinks MON is angling for the job long term or that the board see him as the long-term manager.

Secondly, if things go poorly (I'm going to say right now that I think things will go poorly BTW), the heat will fall on poor MON rather than Maloney, allowing the board to try again later. If things do go well, O'Neill can step down gracefully at the end of the season in favour of Maloney. He doesn't want all that stress and pressure at his age. You have to be a special kind of obsessive like Bielsa to want it at their age.

Edit: James M09 points out another possibility that I hadn't thought of: the idea might be to get Maloney in as assistant now with a view to foisting him on the next manager as the assistant manager. That's just as plausible as my thinking above. Either way, the inclusion of MON only makes sense if Maloney is here for the long haul in some capacity.

Why would he want to come back?

He fell out with the club over future plans for the club last time before he left and its clear nothing has changed since then. He also doesn't need to make a name for himself anymore and he certainly doesn't need the money.

Actually, to be fair, that's another very realistic possibility I hadn't considered. The idea might be to get Maloney in as assistant now with a view to foisting him on the next manager as the assistant manager.

I understand this and a good number of people are saying it, but I honestly think if they wanted Maloney in then MON wouldn’t be there.

To me this seems like a very interim appointment. If Ange doesn’t come in then they might make it to the international break but that will be it.
