Celtic wins Scottish League Cup final with 2 goals from Furuhashi

Kyogo Furuhashi scored twice as Celtic beat fierce rival Rangers 2-1 in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday.

The Japan striker gave his team the lead in the 44th minute and scored a second in the 56th.

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos reduced the deficit in the 64th, but it was Celtic who went on to lift the trophy, with Furuhashi the hero.

“He is a superstar. I can’t talk highly enough about him," Celtic captain Callum McGregor said of the forward, who also scored a double in last season’s final win over Hibernian.

It was a first defeat for Michael Beale since taking over as Rangers boss in November and it keeps Celtic on course for a domestic treble.

The champions have a nine-point lead over city rivals Rangers at the top of the Premiership and are still in the Scottish Cup.

Kyogo Furuhashi scores brace to lift Celtic in Scottish League Cup final

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – Kyogo Furuhashi bagged a brace as Celtic held off Rangers 2-1 to lift the Scottish League Cup for the second straight year on Sunday, while Reims’ Junya Ito starred with a goal and two assists for his team in France.

After hitting a brace in last season’s final against Hibernian, Furuhashi repeated the trick at Hampden Park as Celtic held off its Old Firm rival for its 21st League Cup win.

Daizen Maeda scuffed Greg Taylor’s left-wing cross but the ball fell nicely for Furuhashi as he tapped into the empty net to give Celtic the lead a minute before the break.

“I knew the chance would come,” Furuhashi said. “I wasn’t sure who was going to get the breakthrough, but the ball came to me nicely and I was glad to have slotted it in.”

Rangers’ Ryan Kent hit the post before Furuhashi doubled Celtic’s advantage 11 minutes into the second half when Aaron Mooy released Reo Hatate inside the box. The Japanese midfielder sent the ball across the face of the goal and Furuhashi held off his marker to steer it home.

Alfredo Morelos bundled in from a free kick to give Rangers hope eight minutes later but Celtic, which withdrew the three Japanese players toward the end of the game while sending on new signing Tomoki Iwata, saw off the tense final.

“I’m very happy to have won the cup, and want to thank my teammates for my two goals,” Furuhashi said after taking his tally to 24 goals in all competitions season. “(Rangers) were wonderful opponents and the match could have gone either way. It was a really good game.”

Someone needs to tell Kyogo the truth about Rangers. They are not wonderful opponents. a wonderful opponent doesn't have scores of racist fans who mock you just because your face is a bit different to the local ones.

The jovial assassin is, I believe, more aware of his current surroundings than most fans would give him credit for.

I know he scored the big equaliser against them lsst time but to get a winning double against them in a final.....just superb..

He was just a threat that they couldn't cope with..

There was at least 4 quality runs and pick outs where he got ahead of the defender/away from the defender and scored 2.....could've had at least 1 more..

Was just nice to see how much he destroyed them overall. Been a few where he hasn't been in it that much..

It would be a living nightmare trying to keep tabs on him as a defender . His movement is exceptional . A real asset to the team , and an inspiration to watch .

Wow. 'the number of fully professional clubs has grown to 60 across three tiers – that’s more than in France, for example. Neither is this football as purely strategic endeavour; communities are being bound to clubs to create a nascent cultural heritage...The FA and the J1 League brought prefectures, associations, clubs, coaches, universities and schools together to work for a common good. There is a Japanese concept – “ikigai” – which describes the sourcing of meaning or fulfilment from a purpose. The national team was the ikigai.'

That's very much like Ireland and the GAA (Gaelic football and Hurling sports - I wouldn't expect you know aout that) where the clubs are connected to the local community and Irish heritage at a much deeper level than football here.

    Sugoi ne!

P.S. 前田-さんは生き甲斐です!:) (That may be bad Japanese there!)

    Ikigai
ikigai, the age-old Japanese ideology that’s long been associated with the nation’s long life expectancy. A combination of the Japanese words “iki” (生き), which translates to “life,” and “gai” (甲斐), which is used to describe value or worth, ikigai is all about finding joy in life through purpose. In other words, your ikigai is what gets you up every morning and keeps you going.

His movement is something else. Doesn't always pick the predicatable run and it throws defenders off...good finish too.

Some brilliant runs yet again tonight. Scored from one, got an assist and could've had more from his other runs..
