MLS side Atlanta are reportedly attempting to secure Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis on an initial loan deal with a purchase option this month.

The Greek frontman has looked set to be heading out of Celtic Park this month since Record Sport revealed that talks over a new contract with the Premiership champions fell apart, with reports suggesting the 28-year-old was on the radar of the likes of Sampdoria and Real Valladolid this month. Urawa Red Diamonds also reportedly remain an option having offered the frontman a chance to double his current salary in the J-League, but a switch Stateside appears to be the player's preferred option at this stage.

Reports in Greece state the player has already agreed personal terms with Atlanta but has been waiting on Celtic and the Georgia outfit to come to an agreement over an exit. A report from America suggests the suitors hope to secure a loan agreement this month

The official Major League Soccer website claim to have spoken to an Atlanta insider over the negotiations with the Hopps over the Greece international. They claim that a deal "likely to be a loan with a purchase option that would automatically trigger if certain performance-based incentives hit

They note that the club are looking to save cash to strengthen in other areas this month ahead of their Eastern Conference campaign. They note "such a structure without an upfront transfer fee aids Atlanta’s pursuit as the club revamp the squad this winter."

It remains unclear if Celtic would be open to the prospect of loaning the striker to the America this season with a bid on the table from Urawa Red Diamonds. A stalemate could see Giakoumakis remain in Glasgow's east end, where he now face competition from new signing Hyeongyu Oh as well as Kyogo Furuhashi

    * a loan.

    This isn't an out-of-favour player.

Why have we allowed GG to sort personal terms without guaranteeing an upfront transfer fee is on the table.

ITK fannies had JJ away to Monza on loan as well, be very surprised if we enterained a loan move unless there was a decent enough fee with it, or a nailed on obligation to buy.

Exactly imagine Celtic oh aye we will agree to a loan that’s a year off his deal and value could dwindle

    Atlanta United
are in talks with Celtic over Greek international striker Giorgos Giakoumakis, a source confirms to MLSsoccer.com, but no deal has been reached. Fabrizio Romano first reported the talks and added that Japanese club Urawa Reds are also leading contenders to sign the prolific goal scorer.

Giakoumakis, 28, has eight goals and one assist in 802 minutes for Celtic this year, though has been allowed to leave for better playing time elsewhere. He had 26 goals and one assist in 30 Dutch Eredivisie league appearances during the 2020-21 season for VVV-Venlo.

A deal is likely to be a loan with a purchase option that would automatically trigger if certain performance-based incentives hit. Such a structure without an upfront transfer fee aids Atlanta’s pursuit as the club revamps the squad this winter.

Former Columbus Crew winger Derrick Etienne Jr. is so far Atlanta’s most significant incoming move, as the club have been focused on clearing cap space and transitioning to a new era. The likes of Josef Martínez, Marcelino Moreno, Alan Franco, Dom Dwyer and George Campbell have all left so far this winter.

A loan doesn't suit him either. He has a smallish wage, he wants more money. How will he get that on loan?

Not to mention that the MLS season doesn't start til the end of Feb, so a loan there is only like 3 months worth of actual games at most before the end of the loan spell and it would have to be either renewed or a perm move made etc... idgi.

I thought Atlanta were an Italian team.

    * MLS, and on loan. That sounds like a load of pish.

I'm surprised this guy continues to go under teams' radars.

Banged in the most goals in the Eredivisie and nobody fancied him in that league, we then signed him for about 2 million quid.

Proven goal scorer for us, still hardly anybody wants him. Strange.

It’s so strange for me. There must be more to it. It doesn’t sound like we’re holding out for an unreasonable fee or anything either.

As you say, he’s a really good player.

Unless we’re missing something I can only assume he’s holding out for a much bigger wage than anyone is willing to offer.
