    Punt.

Will only ever be 4th choice here. Would rather have another youngster filling that spot with better potential to progress into a 1st team regular.

Too many flaws in his game however biggest 1 is his lack of height. That ain't ever gonna be coached better

We could always shift to a back 3- he'd be a great sweeper.

Just went to check his height and Celtic website saying he’s 6’3. That’s 2 inches bigger than Starfelt and 1 inch bigger than Jenz :giggle1:

Either the website is wrong or my eyesight’s worse than Dave King’s o_O

Big Mick McManus wasn't exceptionally blessed with anything in particular, but was a smashing big defender for us for a good while. That's what I see in Welsh. The guy is young enough to improve on his weaknesses and has shown enough to be given a bit of backing.

Frustrating as * watching him get slaughtered by our own support, especially when Ange clearly thinks he's worth having around. Armchair Ancelottis everywhere.

Mental * wanting to punt a home grown player who can fill in when required and is more than happy to play second fiddle while learning his trade.

Folk wanting £3m as well. Gies peace for * sake

A more than decent enough squad option at CB and like Ralston I'm sure he'll be fine with that role

CELTIC have booted out an approach from Toulouse for Stephen Welsh.

The Ligue 1 side wanted the Scotland Under-21s defender to bolster their defence for the new season

But SunSport understands Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou is keen to keep Welsh, 22, who is ahead of Christopher Jullien in the pecking order.

Postecoglou last week signed stopper Moritz Jenz on loan from Lorient after losing Nir Bitton and Liam Scales from his squad for this season.

In January the Hoops knocked back a loan approach from Italian side Udinese for Welsh, who has three years left on his Parkhead contract.

He made 24 appearances for Celtic last season and has been in and around Postecoglou's side during pre-season, with Carl Starfelt still out through injury.

And Now he will continue to stay at the Hoops this season as he looks to fight for his place in the first team.

Welsh has been decent pre season, sure he’s had a few screw ups but so have most around him. His use of the ball has improved. At end of the day, he is a low dollar squad player, so no big deal having him as back up. Realistically, the like of say a Starfelt type player is not going to hang around and be a 4th choice back up player.

Apparently Welsh is happy to get a Lille bit of game time while he learns his trade.

Right, I've changed my mind. Let's never let Stephen Welsh leave this football club.

Welsh is homegrown and trained at the club.

He wants to be here, some of the comments are OTT about him and he is good enough for back up.

Clearly our manager rated him or he would have been out the door before now.

Been put in some * positions and never once let the team down. Always called on in a injury crisis.
When you think of some of the dross we've had a centre back over the years I can't believe there's calls to cash in on him.

Homegrown and still loads of room for improvement too.
