We still need another central defender. I like Welsh but he may need to be sent on loan to get some regular first team action this season. Jullien is an enigma at present as to what he will do this season.

We have both CCV and Starfelt and both, like all players, need to have a backup in the squad who can fill the gap seamlessly and have the experience to play with assurance at a moment's notice.

The following players are worth considering,

Bart Shenkeveld - captain of Panathinakos, one year to go on his contract, has played in the Eredivise - age 30.
Bailey Wright, Australian international, Sunderland - aged 28.
Trent Sainsbury, Australian international, Inter-Milan, Kortrijk - aged 30.
Milos Degenek, Australian international, Yokohama Marinos, Red Star Belgrade, Columbus Crew - aged 28.
Harry Souttar, Australian international, Stoke City - age 23.

Ange doing his 'invisible phone' patter to welcome the boys back to training.

"Hello, hello? Are you there? Yes, I'd like to order a treble please, with a side of Champions League Semi Finals."

I like Sainsbury so maybe him plus he's out of contract but the rest nah. Souttar would be too expensive.

Very excited to see what he can get out of this group with a full pre season behind them.

Last pre season Hart, Juranovic, Starfelt, CCV, Bernabei, Hatate, O’Riley, Ideguchi, Forrest, Jota, Maeda, Kyogo and Giakoumakis didn’t feature in the friendlies. Madness that.

None of those are of the level required.

3rd choice shouldn't just be a back up. We need someone who can actually come in and challenge and push the two in front. Properly.

    * MENTAL.

Also a few of those didn't even get much game time until after Christmas. Then you've got some who were injured around Christmas and we didn't see them for months.

Don't know anything about Shenkeveld, but there's no way Starfelt starts ahead of the other four... they're all upgrades but (with the exception of McGree) Ange hasn't shown much interest in signing Australians. Probably the best Oz CB to emerge in years is Kye Rowles. I would've loved to see him at Celtic but the * has just signed for Hearts. It will be fascinating to see how he goes against the Green Machine at Parkhead.

So let me get this straight… the best Aussie centre back in years has just signed for Hearts, but you claim there’s four lesser Aussie defenders on that list who are all better than Starfelt? :43:

Just one more question; what the * are you smoking? :56:

    * almighty. Where to even begin.

Utterly baffling the way some people still go on about Starfelt because he had a few dodgy games last August. How funny that Australia (your country) just happens to have not one, not two...but five centre backs who are better than Starfelt - a guy who struck up a fantastic partnership alongside CCV in one of our best defences in years domestically.

If only our Australian manager was aware of superstar Bailey Wright, playing for... *checks notes*... Sunderland in League One at the age of 29 (30 in a month).

I may be wrong here, but I majorly, majorly doubt guys playing for midtable Belgian sides, Sunderland or Columbus Crew - and all older than Starfelt - are better than him.

And Harry Souttar? Ffs the guy can barely run and hasn't kicked a ball in months. Just because he scored a few goals against utter dross in Australian qualifying doesn't mean he's a good player.

Lol come on mate, settle down. Stuff like this is the reason why they don't take us Aussies seriously.

There's a reason why Ange isn't picking up any Aussie players :giggle1:

Only aussie player I'd take currently is Hrustic (Mooy/Ryan are good players, but we don't need them)

He did say 'to emerge' meaning I believe promising young talent which the guy is and Hearts have picked up on that.

Shenkeveld also played for Melbourne City with success.

As for the others, they have proven they can play well. Simply being Australian does not make you a bad footballer.

Postecoglou had to face similar scepticism when he signed for Celtic.

I didn't say they were lesser.

They're all seasoned pros around the 30 mark. Rowles just turned 24 but is going to be a gun if he continues his current trajectory. Has more potential than any of those players had - although Sainsbury always looked a champ. Probably ruined his career a tad by accepting the Chinese money too early.

No it doesn’t make you a bad footballer being Australian. I love that you are passionate about Australian footballers, but suggesting those players is way off the mark. I don’t see any of those footballers currently up to the task of playing Champions League. Souttar, maybe if he didn’t get injured, he’s much like Julien, coming back from injury, but he’s got a lot to prove right now.

None of them are better than Starfelt, who isn’t proven at the top level and we need to improve the squad not go sideways or backwards if we are to go forwards in Europe.
