Great suggestions. Kevin Barry ('City of Bohane') has a new book, 'Beatlebone', about John Lennon in the west of Ireland which is surreal, but very interesting.

Another very interesting book that is written in a fictionalised Olde English is Paul Kingsnorth's 'The Wake', which concerns an ancient England trying to come to terms with the invading French. The book is incredible.

Did you write the book 'Mr Cleansheets' about the middle aged goalkeeper who acts on an old offer from Man Utd to trial with them? If so, I really enjoyed it.

If you're trying to write in a certain genre, then it will probably be helpful to read books in that genre. In general terms, some of the books suggested above are fantastic ('To Kill a Mockingbird', 'Trainspotting', etc). I'd also suggest some of the following if you're just starting serious reading. The great thing when you've enjoyed a book is that one book suggests another. Goodreads is a good web site for exploring books you might like to read.

    High Fidelity... Nick Hornby.
The Commitments, The Snapper, The Van, The Guts... Roddy Doyle (a quartet of very funny, very well written books set in Dublin).
Buddha Da... Anne Donovan (set in Glasgow).
Kieron Smith, Boy... James Kelman (set in Glasgow).
The Ross O'Carroll Kelly suite of novels (set in Dublin, and hilariously funny).
Me and My Gal... Des Dillon (set in Glasgow).
Anything by Anne Tyler, but in particular 'A Patchwork Planet'.
If you like crime novels, then Ian Rankin's Rebus books, set in Edinburgh, are worth trying.
Tarry Flynn... Patrick Kavanagh (one of the best Irish novels ever written).

How do you like that? Someone's heard of me - I did indeed write Mr C. Very glad you enjoyed it Kramer. (Still waiting for the film to be made!)

If youre interested in wtiting, its also good to mind that there are many different ways/things to write.
Writing a novel is a big task, as are most writing.

I studied film making at uni and do a bit if personal screen writing, which can be a bit different to a novel, but the general process is still the same as far as character development, plots etc. Just the form changes.

One of my biggest problems is that I enjoy the creating of characters and back stories more than the actual discipline of writing the story.

Really enjoy reading thriller books, crime etc.
The Harry bosch books by Michael connelly are good, as are the jack Reacher books.

I actually found that Godfather was one rare case where I preferred the movie to the book. There's too much focus in the book on the life of Johnny Fontane (the singer/actor who asks the Don to get him into the movie in Hollywood) which doesn't add to the main Corleone plot. Still was a good read though.

Started writing a children's book last week and have done just under 2 chapters and last night started on a ghost story so at moment have 5 books on the go.
Difficult trying to remember the plot lines for each of them.

Write them down then. I made no progress at all until I learned to map a story out in bullet points before committing too much to prose. Just mapping a story out should take a pretty long time but it's easy enough to muck about with alternative possibilities rather than writing yourself into a corner.

I loved James Paterson, especially his earlier stuff before he started hiving off the work to monkeys.

The Harry Potter novels are amazing though. I started reading them to my bhoys and quickly raced ahead on my own. Fantastic storytelling.

Reading Stephen King's The Dome, he's possibly the greatest living novelist, incredible body of work & still hasn't lost it.
Love George Orwell, John Steinbeck & Joanne Harris too.

Read the Harry Potter books loads of times, just rounding the off lately as well.
First two books clearly for a younger audience, the rest are a good read.

Think I was at the right age when the first one came out though, and she wrote them to get more mature with the growth of the characters and the readers at the same time.
