I've sorted finance for a new car with part exchange for my current one. Problem is my current one is now feeling dodgy as *, as in head gasket *. What happens if I turn up with the thing and they suss it's needing fixed up, would they cancel the deal? Or add on the price of repairs to my finance?

Anyone with experience of this type of thing, please advise as I'm supposed to drive up to Inverkeithing today for the trade, providing I even make it there.

I had a similar problem years ago.

I had done the deal on the previous Sunday and due to swap on the Thursday when the clutch went on my car that morning.

I called the dealer (arnold clark) to explain and the salesman said that as long as I wanted to go ahead with the deal all I had to do was get my car to their showroom. I got a mate to who had a trailer to take me there and done the swap.

Apparently as long as the car was OK when the deal was agreed/signed they will honour it.

Mind that the salesman, had actually viewed my car on the Sunday when it was driving OK.

    Cheers Bernie.

This deal was all done over the phine/Internet, and they gave me an offer for the part exchange without any questions of what condition the car is in, which makes me think they are used to getting cars with problems, and get their mechanic to sort them?

It depends how much your trade in is worth. If it's a cheap car nearing the end of its life they probably knew it was going to the auction and worth little.

If it's a car worth a bit of money with potentially serious engine trouble then they will walk away.

Is it Arnold Clark, Evans Halshaw ? Or an independent garage ?

I've done a couple of part-ex's with Arnold Clark recently. 1st time it was a glance over the car exterior (in the dark!) to confirm it was in the condition that i said it would be (Oct 2018). The 2nd i was told to bring the car in the day before handover for the car to be put through the workshop for full inspection (this was in January this year).

Each time i was taking a new car to be fair but i'm not sure how they'd be if the engine was *. I've heard stories from mates who were worried as they'd overshot the agreed miles by thousands and the salesman said that if they're taking a new car, they wouldnt be charged the excess...

Id imagine if you're taking a new car off them they will overlook a few things.

You'll only get charged excess mileage if the car goes back to the finance company. If you trade the car into a dealership the agreement you have with the finance company is irrelevant.

Yeah exactly. Id imagine 9/10 the dealership will just sell your car themselves and put their own mark-up on top of the settlement figure.

I should add, am not a fan of hoodwinking people but the place had a red white and blue sign, so thought * them they're clearly huns.

Half the reason people trade in older cars is they are having problems. The dealer will be factoring in some repairs needed. They won't be paying close to what customers pay to repair.

Car garages are currently working on a couple hundred quid margin without checking PX’s over - they are making losses on the majority of cars they’re bringing in and having to sort before doing what they’re doing with it, either shipped straight to auction or stuck on the forecourt.

Their money is made on finance and packages on the card they’re selling, at volume.

Would imagine if it was a big dealer and your car is old it will be * on the first trailer to the auctions without a second glance

A couple of hundred quid margin without checking part exchanges over?

    What dealer is doing that?

My car trade in at arnold is £7.5k yet the same model is currently selling at £11.5k. Wished it was only a couple hundred quid because it would be traded in tomorrow :56:
