I've never actually tried a Tomintoul. Always been put off by them being 40% and chill-filtered, but I see they do a 14 year old now that's at 46% and non chill-filtered. Might give that a try for an introduction to them as it isn't stupidly priced either.

I shall have to defer to your greater knowledge of how tramp's * tastes.

Can any of you recommend a Scotch similar to Balvenie? The 21 year old is the absolute pinnacle of whisky for me - a glass of that with a good Cuban cigar.

I'm assuming you are talking about the 21 Portwood, so without anything else to go on I'm guessing it is the port finish you like, so maybe try the Tomatin 14, Arran Port Cask Finish or Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. I don't have a huge amount of experience with port finishes, as they aren't my favourite, but those are a bit more reasonably priced than the Balvenie and might give you a similar profile, but they are all quite different. On the plus side you could buy all 3 for what you would pay for a Balvenie 21 and still have enough left over for another bottle of something else new to try.

I just googled the Balvenie 21 to double check that it was the one that I had in mind, after you mentioned the price, and it is £160. I think that it was maybe a younger vintage, then, because, as good as it was, I doubt that my friend paid that much for it. :giggle1:

Thank you very much for the recommendation anyway, man. I am not a big whisky drinker, as you may have gathered. :giggle1:

It may well have been that one if he bought it a few years ago, prices of whiskies have skyrocketed over the last 5 years. You could have probably picked that bottle up for around £100, maybe less depending on where you are, it also used to be (may still be for all I know) one that was readily available through duty free, so maybe he got it on offer if he travels a lot.

Have you tried your new bottle yet? If not be ready for the fact it may not taste the same as you remember it. That's not to say it will be bad, I've not tried it, but there can be quite noticeable differences from batch to batch and if it has been a few years since you have had it that difference can be more striking.

i'm just mentioning this in case you try it and think it is off, or that it's you misremembering how it tasted. On the plus side it may well taste even better than you remember.

No way I couldn't NOT try it good Celtic sir lol! :) I'm a borderline * head..hence 90% of my posts on this forum lol.

    It's pretty good.

To be honest, I am not a great whisky drinker..I mean I used to mix it with coke many moons ago o_O (I know! please forgive me old whisky lord!)

But then in 2017... I met this bloke from Edinburgh..lol

And he 'introduced me to whisky' the right way!

Penderyn is a pretty good whisky. (Not that I know much)

By the way, my Edinburgh friend recommends this brand..I tried it last week..It's so smoky..and good!

P.S. * it! I guess I am getting into whisky!

This may seem a dumb question whisky peeps (I ask because I don't know) but I've been told all blended whisky's are bad..

    A) Is this true?

    And if not..

    B) What would you recommend?

Ardbeg 10 was my first regular whisky, so good choice there.

As for blends, anyone that says all blends are bad are either: snobs, idiots, or both.

Like most things you get good ones and bad ones, and a lot comes down to price. Most cheap ones are not great. Your man Ralfy there suggests Lidl's *St margot's* 3 year old, and to be fair it's not bad. If you are in Scotland (maybe Wales as well) you can get it for £14, elsewhere in the UK it's a few quid cheaper. Thanks minimum pricing! But most of the mass market ones like Bells, teachers and the like are best avoided.

Johnnie Walker Black (avoid the red) is decent when you can get it for £20. Green is very good value when you can get it for £28-30. It's a blended malt rather than a standard blend though. Then you move up the price scale, pretty much anything from Compass Box is excellent, although they can be pricey, The Glasgow Blend, Peat Monster and The Spice Tree are probably the best value. Douglas Laing do some really really good blends (Scallywag, Epicurious or Big Peat to name a few) as well.

(Edit: *it just occurred to me, I think it might actually be Queen Margot rather than St Margot. Too many whiskies to remember them all!)

What the majority of people don't realise is that pretty much any scotch whisky (that isn't what is called "single cask" at least) is essentially a blend, and that includes all your single malts.

The difference is that single malts are blends of whiskies from the same distillery, rather than ones from different distilleries. Different casks (sizes, wood types and what they have held previously) and different aged whisky can all get blended (in this context sometimes referred to as vatting) together to create a single malt. It's why all aged whiskies (in the UK at least) use the youngest whisky age on the label even though some of the whisky they add can be much older. The "single" in single malt only means it all comes from the one distillery.
