Two examples I have of this, first one is Dida in that AC Milan and Brazil teams. He wasn’t exactly bad but pretty much every other player was legendary, both at club level and internationally.

The other I can think of is Capdevila who was pretty much the only option at LB in probably the best international team I’ve ever seen winning a Euro’s and a World Cup before Jordi Alba replaced him. Pretty much every other player in the squad was miles ahead of him, he was dependable and pretty good but nowhere near the rest of them.

Any other examples you can think of?

Not so much for longevity, but Jeremy Mathieu played 41 games for Barca in the 2014/15 season when they won a league, cup and CL treble.

Always really liked him as a player and thought he was an obvious choice for them at the time, after Abidal had left still not of the same quality as the others though.

Was perfect for that system though, was prone to a world class save and a very basic error as well though.

Aye, looking at his achievements up against the likes of McStay shows a very untrue story.

    Similar to Peter Lawwell :fear:

Aye how would you feel looking at the haul of medals he has, and quiet a few others tbf, compared to what he has.

I think if we compare lawwell to say Jock brown we could be onto something :fear:

Compare him to Brian Quinn, who is the guy who’s the best I’ve seen from us in that role. Nowhere near the longevity, that was a pisstake answer but to be fair, he deserves the success we had his failures are beyond the success and not for this thread!

Think McStay and the kinda guy he is would be prouder of what he done for us, when he could have easily left but he stuck in and was the shining light in bad times. There’s an often repeated phrase that people don’t remember the losers but it’s a load of *, we remember McStay, everybody remembers the Total Football Dutch team and we will always remember the Seville team. Some things just connect with people.

Horrible footballer. How he got so many games for Man U is unreal.
Sonny Anderson anaw. Utter * yet won several titles.
No a Man U fan btw but these players just stick out as utter guff.

Always thought Johan Djourou who played for Arsenal and managed over 70 caps for Switzerland was an awful player.

Couldn’t believe he played at that level whenever I seen him.

Any third choice keeper who is paid to sit on their hole each week. No chance of playing, just get paid to be emergency cover and to keep a good atmosphere among the keepers. I'm thinking Richard Wright at Man City and Rob Green at Chelsea.

Controversial one but Paul Pogba for Juventus and France. Both give/gave him complete freedom to play in his free left central attacking midfield role, seemingly the only position he can be effective in.
