Play McCarthy as the holding midfielder and let McGregor play further forward. McCarthy is slower I get that but he hardly gave the ball away once tonight. Calm and assured of his ability, can’t wait until he’s up to the fitness levels of the rest.

We need to get a defense specialist coach from Uruguay ASAP.

You need 2 equally good players available in that position to free up Callum in midfield creative role/playmaker.

Exactly, which is why I keep saying if McCarthy can get himself fully fit it could be a game changer for us this season.

You don’t think we have a scouting network? At all?

We didn’t find out anything we didn’t already know tonight. We are very good going forward, but defend like amateurs, and you will get nothing more often than not when you defend as bad as we do. It was the same old story. It’s easy to say take the positives out the game, but it’s the same positives we are taking out of pretty much all the games. Scoring 3 goals away from home should be more than enough to pick up at least a point. When we concede, we seem to implode far too easily. It was the same away to Alkmaar when we lost the first goal.

McCarthy looks miles away from being match sharp in my opinion, and too many times tonight he was negative. Instead of turning and driving forward, he simply bounced it back to the centre halfs where it had just come from. I would expect him to vastly improve over time providing he can stay fit though.

Rollercoaster of a game as appears to be coming the norm in Europe.

Loads of positives, some negatives and plenty to build on.

With Calmac, Forrest, Kyogo and Jullien out there’s a total spine missing never mind the others providing any sort of depth and we took it to a top Spanish side full of quality.

Wouldn't call Dudu and Ange's agent a scouting network...

With a brand new manager, set up, style of play and a host of new players, I think the offensive understanding between players will come alot quicker than the defensive.

As Ange said, I think time is going to be big factor in getting our defence to play cohesively.

That being said, I don't think there's any getting away from the notion that Starfelt isn't going through an adaption period, and is quite probably a very very limited defender.

He doesn't seem at all capable of reading the game.

Money wasted? Perhaps. But I still believe he'll do ok as a spfl level 3nd string...perhaps.

What is apparent, is that we simply haven't invested correctly in the backline.

The next window should see us bring in a solid and reliable CB, who can play at a level to be relied upon in Europe. Believe it or not theyre not hard to come by, Europe is littered with them, alot of them sitting on benches in Germany, France, even Belgium and Holland.

We bring in a new CB to partner with a fit and raring to go Julien, with Welsh and Big Vic in reserve, a decent LB, with Taylor as cover and our defensive frailties should be behind us imo. That leaves us looking good at the back, with plenty of cover for injuries.

Move on the Covidiot, and perhaps wait a window or two to shift Starfelt, taking a bit of a hit.

Granted we did not have our first string 11 against Betis but I can not help but think that conceding two goals after being 2 nil ahead in the first half has more to do with a weak mind set. Perhaps we need a sports psychologist consultant to be at the club for a time.

These Europa games need to not be treated as a novelty item in the season by the players as a collective group. There needs to be a ruthlessness to both away and home games similar to playing a Scottish Cup final and the importance and prestige of coming away with a win. We started strong against Betis and gave them a fright and did so again in the last 15 minutes, so we are capable of doing it. That mental strength and focus on the 'prize' is what seems missing for the entire game. We need to make less mistakes than the opposition and take our limited goal chances clinically.

Once the players in the nucleus of the squad get to know each other on the pitch, hopefully that will happen - and soon.

Do the players get a bonus for an away win ? A home win ?

May have lost, but I haven't been this entertained watching Celtic in a long time. They're a superb watch.

All things considered I felt we gave a good account of ourselves tonight given the circumstances. We played some really good football at times.

It is easy to rip into the defence everytime we concede but the midfield really needs to retain the ball better and minimise that pressure. The spells that we were showing for the ball, switching play and playing two/three touch stuff is where we need to find consistency. Will take time but I am optimistic Ange will coach this into the team or find the players who can play this way.

Just watched the game; random thoughts:

    • Soro seems to always want to turn backward when receiving the ball, which I find frustrating, and his needless dirty fouls are unhelpful
    • Rogic's touch amazing all game
    • McCarthy > Soro. Can't wait for his fitness to improve
    • Soro and Rogic both culpable for third goal - lazy
    • Ralston seems to be so central when we defend deep, leaving the opposing winger a mile of space to run at him
    • Exciting! In retrospect, shutting down and aiming to hold on after going 2 up I don't think would have helped. They had enough quality to knock in goals with the amount of time left in the game at that point.
    • Impressed with Jota and thought Montgomery was surprisingly solid.
All-in-all, I found that encouraging. We are down some good players, and I look forward to a front line with Kyogo, Abada and Jota.

the players aint fit enough to play the way ange wants them almost every game we have played well first half then there is a massive drop off in the second, its happened in the games we have won but we had killed the games in the first half blitz.

First paragraph hits the nail on the head. A few leaders in the team who stand up we might be OK as our mindset isnt right.

We also need to be more pragmatic and realise a tweak in tactics is the right thing to do once 2-0 in a European tie away from home.

definitely, and there are no suggestions that there wouldn’t have been pragmatism once we reached half time.

Can’t blame the manager that the boys on the field couldn’t hold out for another 18’ until half time and allowed Betis to equalize only EIGHT MINUTES after we went up 2-0.

I actually think the Manager has some blame here. If Ange has not prepared the team in terms of any instructions/coaching for a situation in which we have gone 2 goals up in a European away game to change the approach, then we will likely continue to have results like this.

Why is it important to at least consider some change? The home team if they have any quality at all in an attacking sense - and Betis as an example do - will have to up their game and press harder for the 3rd goal. We saw this last night, we've seen it before.

What could have been done? Have the back 4 and defensive midfielder(s) switch on the positional discipline. Stay in formation, keep in your position, face the ball, back to goal as much as possible. Defend Defend Defend. Our attacking midfielders, wingers and striker (lone) need to remain switched on to take the game into their half and press for the 3rd goal. They do need to be prepared to defend from the front too, but they also know their defensive teammates are in position.

After we have gone 4-2 down I get that we need to push on again as a team. But that number 4 in the goals against for me should not be happening.
