I have, but I'm not religious so when it's happened it was just a bit of a * missing a day off that most people are getting. If I has a devout christian that took it seriously as a religious holiday things might have been different, but I'm not so I didn't make a big deal of it.

Love to think if he was Catholic and Irish and wanted to take a religious day off what the reaction would of been here....

Some extremely unCeltic-like attitudes in here.

Can’t complain about/combat Hun intolerance of one religious identity while showing a lack of tolerance for someone else’s.

Bit of a broad analogy, but Yom Kippur is basically similar to our Good Friday: it’s the most solemn and reverential day in their year. It goes to the core of the practice of what it means to be Jewish.

Any workplace would and should (and is usually legally obliged to) grant an exemption to work obligations in these circumstances. It would be a breach of his civil rights if we didn’t, let alone basic employment law.

Again, this is on the board/club: we knew we were signing a fairly deeply religious Jew (or we should have). No one would sign an African international and not be prepared for them to go to the Cup of Nations every couple of years; this is similar. Provision should have been made; instead, we’re left relatively threadbare (though not compared to some other positions on the pitch).

You could have claimed an exemption, if you could demonstrate that it was a day of actual religious observance and not just a family celebration, etc, which is easy to do. It’s done all the time.

Fair enough. Genuine question though, would it be ok if the day was personally defined? If not, why not? Maybe I take my birthday off every year as a day of reflection and repentance.. would that be acceptable or does it have to be associated with a “recognised religion”.

    Religious debate? No thanks.

I’m tired anyway. I’m going for a Yom Kippur, wake me up in an hour.

I don't think we dish out religious holidays by default. He probably requested it off. Hopefully, it's only once a year

Good Friday certainly isn't mine and using the term 'our' when saying Good Friday somewhat implies we're all Catholics being intolerant to a Jewish holiday. For me, and I suspect many others, that isn't the case. I would be annoyed (but tolerant, of course) of any player missing a game due to any religious festival, including Christian ones - so let's be careful not to imply this is some ignorance of foreigners.

I also take issue with the suggestion the board should've known they were signing a 'deeply religious Jew'. Sorry, why should the board know what the beliefs of the players are? That's completely inappropriate and a clear path to discrimination.

Once the player has signed they can ask what days off they need for religious observance. There's an argument they should've prepared better once they knew each players' days off, but then it is only one day.

I think the thing people need to get their head round is you can defend someone's rights and protect them from discrimination without coming onto the internet and gushing about how happy you are with it.

I believe Abada has the right to miss the game due to religious observance without reprimand or discrimination because (to my knowledge) it's protected in law. I would help him defend that right.

At the same time, I'm not happy about it and I think it's poor. My opinion doesn't change based on how solemn the day is in any given religion.
