Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley says there is Premier League interest to rival Celtic in their pursuit for defender Liam Scales.

But the Rovers boss expects Scales to be available for both legs of their crucial Europa League Conference clash with Albanian side Teuta Dorres.

Celtic are the clear front runners to sign the versatile defender and have been in discussions with Rovers about a deal. However, Bradley confirmed this morning that it isn't a one horse race.

"I know there is a lot of interest and there has been for quite some time, but right now Liam is fully focused on tomorrow (first leg v Teuta in Tallaght) and going forward until Stephen McPhail (sporting director) and the board tell me otherwise that's the way it will be. But there is a lot of serious interest from the English Premier League and Scotland.

"There has been bids put down. We've had a number of managers ring myself and Stephen regarding Liam and watched him on a weekly basis," continued Bradley, when pressed on the Premier League angle. "That has been there as well as Celtic and others. There is a lot of interest."

Bradley said the club were prepared for a scenario where they received an offer for Scales was too good to turn down but he admitted that his natural preference is to delay in the short term with the European matches carrying such importance.

Rovers are one tie away from a €3m playoff to reach the Conference League group stages. That said, the fact Scales is under contract until the end of 2022 means they are in a position to look for a significant six figure fee for his services and there have been suggestions they could receive close to €500,000.

"You have to weigh up every option and avenue and work our what's best for the club first of all," said Bradley.

"It's very important that you're open and honest with the player and his representatives and make the best decision for all. But you weigh up everything - how important these games are, the league in the next month or two. Like we have done in the past with so many

"To be fair, Liam has been brilliant - even last year signing a new deal when there was interest there”

Different type of player but yes, he was excellent.

I’d be surprised if he doesn’t go across the water soon

THE HUNT FOR Liam Scales’ signature has intensified with confirmation that there is now solid Premier League interest in signing the Shamrock Rovers defender.

Celtic opened discussions with the Hoops earlier this week after a bid understood to be a League of Ireland record in the region of €600,000.

Scales, who turns 23 next week and can play at centre back or left wing back, has been tracked by English top flight clubs for the last 12 months having also impressed for Republic of Ireland Under-21s.

Matters have since escalated since Celtic firmed up their interest with an offer, and Rovers head coach Stephen Bradley explained the Scottish club are not the only ones to have tabled a concrete bid for Scales.

The last player Rovers sold to the Premier League was teenage goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who joined Manchester City in 2019. A loan spell at Rochdale saw him break into the senior international team while midfielders Jack Byrne and Aaron McEneff have recently departed for APOEL Nicosia and Hearts, respectively.

Graham Burke, another who earned Ireland recognition, has since returned to Tallaght Stadium after joining Preston North End in 2018, but Bradley explained how Scales is on a different level.

“Gavin was crazy at the time with clubs in Italy and every corner of Europe looking for Gavin. Graham had a couple. Jack’s was slightly different as it came towards the end [of his contract] but there was interest from clubs in different parts of Europe and America.

“But in terms of the level of Premier League and Scotland, this is probably the most [interest] we’ve had, yeah.”

Scales reported for training at Rovers’ training base as normal earlier this morning and is set to feature in the first leg of their Europa Conference League third round qualifying tie with Albanian side Teuta tomorrow.

Desmond creating interest and a bidding war for a player we have no intention in signing. The guy is a genius

Norwich are the PL team we're fighting with for Scales. This guys a decent player. People turning their noses up at him just cause his LOI are silly. It's like saying we cannae find a decent player in a lesser league.

He's 22, over 200 professional appearances, league winner with UCD and playing European football for Rovers. He's a good player.

We should really stop making bids for players ‘we have no intention in signing’ so

That’s exactly what we’re doing for Edouard. Worth a shot when there’s about £20m involved. For an extra 100-150k, in a club where he doesn’t have a controlling stake :56:

They wouldn’t find themselves in a bidding war that’s for sure

    Yep.

Havent Dundalk been in the groups twice in the last 3 seasons and Rovers once?

When's the last time Aberdeen or Hibs did that? Must be a decade.

If there's a stand out player in the LOI at the top club then perhaps he's good enough for us

RTÉ saying there's two bids in for him, us and a premier league side.

The most stand out player in LOI for the last few seasons was Jack Byrne.. And I mean he was proper stand out, probably the best player I've seen in the league for a while.. I doubt he'd get a game for us to be honest. In Cyprus now

They're manager is saying that he expects him to play both legs of their qualifiers before he * off, so you're talking at least a week of waiting to see anyway.
