If Villarreal beat Celtic would you be fine with him saying that? Celtic have probably the most populated trophy cabinets on the planet. Does the same apply then?

The magnitude of the game (unless its a friendly) doesn't matter.

Celtic aren’t the 2nd richest club in the world and probably the biggest/2nd biggest. Too overlook what Villareal have done is a travesty to them I think, said this before in the thread, they have been that consistently brilliant over 15 years people forget how small they are and just how fantastic they have done. They punch above their weight that much people forget they are a ‘David’

If Crystal Palace beat Real Madrid in a European final then everyone would be saying it was David vs Goliath as well.

Fucksake it was the same when Fulham played Atletico in the final and that Atletico team weren’t what they are now.

Literally every football fan agrees how deluded and arrogant the English are and how dismissive they are of other countries.

That doesn’t mean Villarreal’s achievement is any less incredible.

That's an odd way to decide the size of a football club, Chelsea has a population of about 40,000 which is less than Hamilton.

It’s not ‘deciding’ the size of a football club though.

Chelsea are a global club and will have one of the biggest fanbases in the modern game and spend billions building squads.

Villarreal are a small, community club who just happen to constantly punch above their weight and make a mockery of bigger clubs. Just read up a little bit about them and you’ll know the difference between a Villarreal and a Chelsea.

Since when did a town/city’s population dictate how good football team are?

Villarreal have Spanish, French & Argentine internationals in their squad. They’ve got a * World Cup winner ffs :56:

Honestly, some folk on here man. Villarreal have been a reasonable force in Europe for years now. I’m scratching my head at how the population of the city that a football team just happens to find itself in determines how good they are.

You cannot compare Villarreal to Hamilton. Hamilton beating Villarreal would be David bearing Goliath. People need to get off the English premier League train that Sky have forced them onto.

Villarreal beating Manchester United in a European Final is huge. I don’t understand your point here at all.

The fact they have done well in Europe before doesn’t make this any less impressive. It’s incredible they’ve made it to European semi finals/quarter finals before.

They’ve never won a major trophy in their history. Man Utd are one of the top 5 biggest clubs in the world. Pogba probably cost twice as much as Villarreal’s entire squad. Of course that’s a David v Goliath story.

What you on about an EPL train? I don’t think anyone here thinks Man Utd are a great team. But given how much they spend and are worth, Villarreal really shouldn’t be getting near them.

Villarreal beating Man Utd in a Europa League final is a great achievement, but I’m sorry, it’s not completely outside the realms of reality like some are making out. A team that has a number of international players for historically very successful nations (one of which won the World Cup) beating Manchester United in a game of football is not a ridiculous outcome. It’s in fact, very plausible. Yes, Man Utd were the favourites, yes it was an upset, but it’s not shifting any tectonic plates.

Clyde beating Celtic with Roy Keane is David beating Goliath. A top tier Spanish side littered with international players from top tier nations and have been a reasonable force in Europe for as long as I can remember beating Manchester United, yes, a global powerhouse of football, is a fantastic achievement, but not an outcome that is completely out of this world.

Same elitist attitude we faced when beating Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool on our way to Seville.

I think the thing is that Villarreal are a young club from a tiny, reasonably remote town of about 50,000 people who had to climb through the divisions. It’s been a very long journey for them and Wednesday night was a victory years in the making for them. They are in many ways comparable to Watford or Bournemouth or the likes. Yes they have good players but a lot of them are players who were cast off by other clubs or whose careers were at a cross roads and seen as washed up (Parejo, Alcácer, Albiol etc.).

So all in all it was a fantastic achievement for them.

Some game Besiktas and Sporting Lisbon, 1-3 to sporting coming to half time, Besiktas had a goal chalked off just there.
