That Depeche Mode when we score!!
An hour before Dusk leading into very early evening or going out just before first light is the best time to see Owls Susan. Our Commonest the Tawny Owl is more often heard than seen and hunts in Wooded areas but can be seen on Telegraph Poles near Wooded areas.
Our other 4 regular species all hunt in the open, with The Barn Owl being perhaps the most often seen. Many a lucky driver have seen Barn Owls hunting on the roadside or in fields right nest to roads.Barn Owls hunt mostly at dusk and night but can be seen in daylight especially in the winter and if their young need food because of rain at night.
The Short Eared Owl hunts mostly in day light and loves the Moors. It nests on the ground unlike the Barn and Tawny Owls, and the the hardest regular to see the Long Eared Owl which likes to nest on the edges of Forests,or in Copses,it too hunts in open country.
That said i have yet to see an Owl myself this year Susan!! And last year, largely because of lock down only saw Tawny Owl.But over the years i have had some cracking views of Owls including a pair of Short Eared Owls hunting and catching voles very near me,then one of them had a spat with a Female Hen Harrier!!
So Susan find suitable habitat, like Farmland with some rough grass or open Grassland and start looking as dusk closes in,best get there before dusk to get your eyes sharp as light fades.you need luck as well and patience. You may see them on your first or 8th visit etc etc. Also try different locations, your luck will eventually arrive.
Also listen out in May or June for the squeaky calls of young Tawny Owls in Wooded areas, they sometimes call for their parents in daylight and can be seen. Also whenever birds go crazy with alarm calls in the Woods, this is often a Tawny Owl and sometimes you can see them in a tree.
Only a matter of time Susan before you tell us on here of seeing an Owl or even a Photo:biggrin:

Very interesting Pete I will keep my eyes peeled and as you say hopefully it's just a matter of time, seen a clip a while ago of an owl was flying through tree's silently and turning vertical to get through the space's can see it's an amazing predator being so silent in flight the prey wouldn't stand a chance :)

We were so lucky,as I posted it’s only the third time in 12 years and it flew round the car and across a field with those huge silent wings, so lucky

@cidermaster I believe I saw a Barn owl about 12 years ago, I nearly ended up in a ditch because of it. I was driving down to the In-laws in the borders just outside Kelso, when one near smashed right into the windscreen flying from field to field I stupidly just reacted and swerved the car to miss it, thankfully both owl and the car and passengers were all fine but it was a beauty. I think it was a barn owl anyway it looked very white like Harry Potters owl. Interestingly enough this was about 1 or 2 in the afternoon in broad daylight.
