“The Guardian has uncovered an unpublished European Super Leaguedocument in the hidden code of its new website which seeks to justify the controversial breakaway by saying it will give fans “what they want”.

In comments that will raise eyebrows, it also claims the breakaway will offer “a sustainable and competitive environment for the whole football pyramid” – by providing more than three times the level of solidarity payments to smaller clubs than currently exist. It also reveals that the clubs are considering intriguing new ideas, including “technology-enhanced rule implementation” that are not backed by the authorities, although it does not go into details. But it seems to drastically underestimate the public criticism of the proposals. “Unanimity of view is rarely the case where fundamental change is involved,” it says. “We welcome this debate as sport is all about passion and differences of opinion are an essential part of being a fan. But in the end, we are confident that when fans are welcomed back into the stadiums and the first Super League matches are played, fans will enjoy the greatest competition club football has ever seen.”

That such a document was so easily discovered by someone with little specialist knowledge of coding will be embarrassing to the European Super League. However, its underlying message is that the 12 clubs – including six from the Premier League – had no choice but to act because of the financial costs they were facing. Citing Covid, it warns that the accumulated losses of top-level clubs exceed €5bn (£4.3bn). “The value of live media rights is stagnating or declining as some of our competitions fail to meet the needs of fans and new generations seek entertainment in ways which didn’t exist 10 years ago,” it says.”

Them blaming COVID is like the post office looking to cut employees due to COVID ... busiest time since Christmas for them .... these clubs now make more from tv than gate money so it’s a poor excuse

So tv rights are going down whole players demand higher salaries so just share between less and it becomes more. Again UEFA and the Premier league are to blame as they pushed this unsustainable football football model.
This may harm us slightly in the long run but I think we will be able to run better with lesser European money than most English teams could without Premier league money. We would weather the storm, some of them would cave.

I hope it happens, and UEFA remain firm on their stance regarding not letting their players play in their competitions. Players will think twice about going to a team effectively playing glorified friendlies. You will of course get some who don't care and will just go chasing the money, but that is no different to now. If it happens, watch the EPL crumble, because their Sky money will be a fraction of what it is just now. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the moment when they come calling for us and the other mob to head South, and if that were to happen, we should be telling them to ram it. I really don't see this having any major effect on us. We get a pittance from Sky as it is anyway. We aren't reliant on that money to survive, unlike plenty South of the border who budget on it. I can see this backfiring spectacularly for the teams who join it, players and managers want to win trophies and be successful. You can't do that playing in meaningless games, because ultimately that is what they will be doing.

Hope UEFA decide in their EURO meeting on Friday to take matches from their stadiums.
Give Celtic park a couple of matches.

Hearing how "heartbroken" James Corden is about this makes me want it to go ahead :56:

Im totally meh about it actually, the Champions League was already heading this way, and the EPL is a joke, the reasons I don't watch anything outwith Celtic and Scotland matches. Football has been * for a while. Fascinating watching it all unfold and the carnage ensuing.

Imagine the state of every club in epl and championship if they had to suddenly adopt to a income through TV deals and sponsorships akin to all the clubs in Scotland.

95% would fold within 2 years.

All of those clubs have some the world's best talent with them. If Uefa and the associations remain firm in their positions, they will habe very little football to play as well as, potentially being banned from representing their nation internationally.

That will make a few players drop out, but I think the world will be in for a surprise to see who's left and taking the money, bet there will still be some really big name players taking part because their pittance of £300k weekly isn't enough to survive on.

I find the fact that BoJo and the government are criticising this and even meeting about it utterly ridiculous and a waste of parliamentary time...

What has it got to do with government? Whether you agree with it or not.. it’s private businesses making a decision to trade elsewhere as a cooperative effectively.... snd really?! Why shouldn’t they if that’s what we wanted? If Celtic really had the chance to play competitively elsewhere I’d be raging if any authority (football or government) tried to stop us..

To me it looks like they are trying to control where they trade and protect the interests of the epl and broadcasters. They should be completely impartial in this and not even commenting let alone weighing in on it.

If fans and ‘stakeholders’ (horrible term) of individual clubs are unhappy then it’s up to them to fight it... not have government try to lever a change of heart at tax payers expense.

EVERYYHING about football fkkkn stinks right now.

Exactly how I feel and have felt for years. TBH been waiting on the bubble bursting for years.

Can't wait for the Super soccer league. Wouldn't watch it but would make our own footballing landscape better with these 'super clubs' off to play a seven game world series infront of there 'fans'.

Whats left of football after this will be left to the real fans, whats not to like about it? Bring it on.

The fact that the UK government are getting involved in this debate is a strange one. I thought countries in the past have been booted out of FIFA for interfering in football associations.

The UK government would be better getting their own house in order

Rather than reviewing football, review your PPE contracts and procurement procedures, or lack of...

if you think about this breakaway, it's not such a bad idea.
if it's run along the lines of the American franchise system one team for one city.
and I would support a Glasgow team..... so lets see.
    the Glasgow thistle..... naw
    Glasgow bears...... * naw
    glasgow chibbers...... maybe.
Glasgow Celtic..... OH! looks like we have a winner.
