How can people be upset about us negotiating a transfer fee and also talk about how much money we've wasted on poor players.

Hope this guy makes the grade if he signs, but it could go either way so I'm glad we're not going around the continent paying what clubs ask for first time.

Nothing wrong with a little prudence as long as we don't delay too long and lose out McGinn style

Sportime are the source that broke this news. Have no idea if they are a reliable, it’s a Greek source. Also claim AEK are wanting £6.4m and that Leeds Utd are also keen.

I get we need to thrash out the best possible deal but we also need a quality keeper asap!! If this guy is nearly as good as Forster then £6M would have to be considered a bargain. He is young enough to sell on eventually or alternatively prove value for money over a career with us.

if we were prepared to pay in the area of £8m for Forster, then we can afford it for Barkas.

The importance of a good keeper shouldnt be understated. At 6’5 he will be a big presence in the box as well and he has quite a bit of experience at 26 and having played in europe.

I think AEK will hold firm as they have knocked back a few bids for him in the €8m area in the past. If we want him we will need to pay the money.

Paying 8 million for forster and paying 8 million for this guy are two very different scenarios. You know exactly what forster is capable of and he can settle in at the drop of a hat. This guy might not even speak english and will take time to adapt to Scotland.

€7m is a bit cheaper than £8m. My point was that the money is there, given that we were willing to pay for Forster. In any case, theres no point making a Forster comparison because he doesnt want to come back if reports are to be believed so we need to move on.
By that same rationale it would have been a bigger risk paying £8-9m for Edouard.
Sometimes to get quality you need to pay for quality.
There should be no sense of self entitlement here, given that so many teams are already aware of this guy and that he has attracted bids and attention already. Goalkeepers can be the difference between games. The recent history of howlers in europe should serve to reason why we need a quality keeper.

Forster is a known quantity to us and he would hit the ground running no doubts but he evidently doesn't want to come.

The next step is we try to find as close to his quality as possible. We've been left in the lurch by Forster (pun intended) so we might not have prepared an extensive scouting list.

That said Barkas is 26 so there's the added bonus that any outlay we make on him could be recouped and then some, any transfer fee on Forster would be outlayed knowing that he will have little resale value as he approaches his mid 30s.

Signing any player brings risk; for every Shved that has come in without knowing English and failed to settle, we can point to an Edouard. It's down to the scouting and management team to do their background work and minimise that risk.

Have watched him for the past 3 years in AEK. He is among the best goalkeepers in Greece, probably the 2nd best behind Jose Sa of Olympiacos. He is also one of the two best goalkeepers of the Greek national team, with Odysseas Vlachodimos (First GK of Benfica), even beating him the previous year, as he was starting in every important match for Greece. He is a big presence indeed. He is known for his amazing one-on-one saves as he is coming out of the goal very quickly, while covering almost all of the goal. He is also very concentrated, doesnt concede a goal from outside the box so easily. He needs to improve his footwork (its just ok) and his aerial ability in corner situations.
AEK believes in him, and with a good run in Europa League next year, his price might jump up to 10-12 million (a little bit higher than his estimated price 2 years ago when AEK was in the CL).
My opinion: If Celtic buys him and starts him, in a 2-year span from now, Barkas price may almost reach 20mil. He is incredible.

Watching this vid on YT and he is a great shot stopper but doesn’t seem to be a ball catcher. I like a keeper who can smother a shot and hold it as well. Could see us losing a few goals from rebound saves. Looks worth €5m though. Maybe the vid is just made up of his blocked saves???
