FRASER FORSTER has stunned Celtic by SNUBBING the chance to come back on another season-long loan.

SunSport revealed last night that the Hoops chances of re-signing the giant No1 on a fresh agreement for the potentially momentous 2020-21 campaign looked dashed

We had already reported the former England No1 had returned to the south coast for crunch talks with Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl over his future with still two years left of his highly lucrative St Mary’s deal.

Forster’s loan arrangement for last season officially ended yesterday – and before sitting down with Hasenhuttl he had indicated to Hoops boss Neil Lennon he was keen to stay at Parkhead and aim for 10-in-a-row.

But from that discussion with Hasenhuttl the 32-year-old – magnificent for the Hoops as they achieved nine-in-a-row, retained the Betfred Cup and qualified for the Europa League group stages – had a dramatic change of heart and has decided to stay to fight for a place in the Saints side.

It’s understood Forster – reputed to be on a weekly wage of £90,000-plus at his parent club - had hoped for a permanent move to Celtic now instead of another loan.

It’s a huge blow for Lennon.

We understand right up until yesterday Celtic felt very confident of Forster staying.

A close source told SunSport: “The club had agreed a season-long loan deal with Southampton with an option to buy.

“This wasn’t about money – there was also every desire to push the boat out on personal terms for Fraser for an eventual permanent agreement.

He has an extremely lucrative contract at Southampton.

“Fraser had also indicated he was happy to stay at Celtic.

“But the fact of the matter is Fraser’s had a conversation with the Southampton manager and from that he has decided not to return.

“He feels he wants to fight for a place down there.

“It’s a big disappointment. Fraser was magnificent last season and everyone wanted him to stay - but it’s his decision.

“Everything was done to keep him.

“Now, though, it’s about moving on.”

Forster has had Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn ahead of him at Saints but has opted to try and force his way back into Hasenhuttl’s plans instead of guaranteed action at Celtic.

For Lennon it’s now about searching for another keeper, with Craig Gordon gone and Scott Bain the only current senior option.

It’s possible the Celts boss could look to bring in TWO keepers, with rookies Conor Hazard and Ross Doohan the others in the squad.

Players don't really give a * about supporters, they just say what's needed to be said at the time, for them it's a job and it's understandable that they would want to maximise their finances, it can be a short career for many.

The deal was already agreed with Southampton apparently. He’s chosen to stay down south money talks.

This is a * up from our board, they should have gave him the money plus they shouldn't have let Gordon go so soon he was decent back up, now we'll probably be stuck with Bain who is dodgy.

If the reports are true then the board have did everything they can to bring him back but he's decided against it.

    Also Bain > Gordon.

    That's a big disappointment.
Was it a Man City (not Hart) goalie that Celtic were linked to earlier in the year?

It may very well be true but I always take these "club sources" with a massive pinch of salt.

Club source who knows the details of players contacts and conversations he's had with manager and board. Very select few with have those details at this time seen as he only spoke to Southampton yesterday. So unless Lenny or Lawwell are running to the * scum I'll not be reading to much into it until I hear it from Lennon or we sign another goalkeeper

Don't think it's a money thing with FF. He's made his finances already in the EPL

I'm sad that he's not staying though. The guy fits Celtic like a * glove tbh and is literally our saviour on most European nights. Like many others have said, anything a player says unless it's Broony goes in one ear and out the other. We should stop lapping up the false praises and words of players after what happened with Tierney. I genuinely thought FF would want to stay though, weird.

His loan deal literally only ran out yesterday.

So since then he has had such in depth discussions, long before any transfer window opens, and a source has, not only found out information from these discussions, but also contacted SunSport and Record Sport to tell them all the details of this and the final word is now that it's done.

If it's a purely financial decision then how do we pay him more than the £90k a week he's on at Southampton?

The reports state it was a loan for 12 months with an option to buy - which would mean no reduction in wage and therefore indicate the decision wasn't financial.

I find it odd that if Southampton were willing to let him go out again, that he thinks he's in with a chance of getting in the squad.

Given the fact he spoke last year about his struggles with mental health while he was at Southampton and not playing id be hugely surprised if he's even remotely interested in going back to that type of environment, it's also why I don't think he would have been tempted with talk of Chelsea or Arsenal either. At his age I think playing 1st team football is his top priority. And considering the career he's had I don't think he'll be short of a few quid. In all honesty he was probably set for life after his 1st 4 years here

His choice. But Soton have a keeper problem, second worst goals against in the EPL and probably convinced him he will be No 1 again.

I think he will be soon back on the bench at Soton and out on loan or sold in the January window.

Think that's the Forster journey with Celtic wrapped up.
Wouldn't be as opposed to Marshall.

    Absolutely NOT Hart, too unpredictable
