I've got to sort out a laptop for my dad, but I don't have a Scooby about them.

He needs one that's good for playing games on.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

If not, can you tell me what processor and graphics card I should be looking for?

Also, anyone know a good retailer in Ayrshire?

    Thanks in advance. :ynwacelti

    Erm....not sure.

Ones where he goes round shooting people.

He's got a PS3 & 4 and he did by a gaming pc few years ago as well as a VR headset.

He's got a Steam account online that he has some games on.

The laptop is so he can play those sort of games when he goes into hospital.

Not sure. He's mentioned spending over a grand.

I would assume a 4k screen do if they do them?

If you’ve got over a grand to play with, google Alienware gaming laptops. Anything in that price range will play any games. Probably best to get one with a Pentium i-7 processor and at least 8GB RAM (though more is better if your budget allows it). Should also look for one that has a dedicated graphics card, rather than just an integrated graphics card.
4k screen isn’t essential imo as not all games support them, but a nice option to have.

    Thanks for that @Minty. :50:

I think Alienware is the make of the PC he bought a few years back.

if your dad knows about computers try this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ they have pre built and also do custom pcs/laptops for gaming can work out cheaper than buying a pre built one from a big company

Was going to start a new thread,

Looking at getting a Lapto to replace my old p.c (rather than trying to upgrade this as really old naw been used in years)
From what I've read looking at 8GB ram and SSD but naw really looking to spend more than £300 , struggling to see one under £400 is this normal??

A mate who built me a gaming desktop has a friend who is closing his shop down because of what has happened. I asked him for you and he will sell you a pro book 8gb Ram and 128 SSD. You will probably want more I suspect.

Alternatively, could ask for him to build you a gaming PC.

He customises laptops and desktops. Not too sure if he uses old shells and puts new hardware in them but I'll find out for you. Might be about to up the SSD as I was quoted £220 with 128.

Had my heart set on the HP Omen 17 i7-9750 + RTX 2060/70

But after countless hours on review sites and YouTube videos lol

I think I'm going to hold off till a 17inch Ryzen 7-4000 laptop comes out that I can bundle with an rtx card.

For some reason all amd 17inch laptops are only configured just now with a 1660 ti but yet a lot of 15inch ones come with a rtx

Was going to just go with the 15inch but know I would regret it as it doesn't need to be that portable

I've just moved all my storage onto one drive, if you've got office you get a free 1TB storage on it. Freed up so much space on my laptop. Might help if storage capacity is limiting your budget.

Cos I haven't bought one since 2013 everything seems to have changed. I was outraged there was no disc drives now typically, even though they are rarely used. SSDs now too. Think I'll just wait see cos that deal I posted there wont be deliver for about 4 weeks. If it was in stock etc I'd maybe be more inclined to just go for it.

Before you invest in a new laptop why not install a new Linux OS. There are plenty of options out there and well suited to older machines with lower specs

Thanks for the suggestion. The laptop actually packed it in and stopped working. I have ordered this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0877L4KMD? ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image . It is not due for delivery til end of the month. I had actually already ordered it and then the old laptop died just then other day.
