Susan, is this a coincidence or what . You posted a photo a couple of days ago of the tree with the big mouth. I asked you if you hung around to see if anything lived in it. You said you seen it on your way home from Stirling. My daughter and I have been to a bird of prey centre near Stirling where they entice Red Kites with small pieces of meat to a hide. The views are amazing. You get really close to the birds, and get some great photos. It's called ARGATY RED KITES. It's an amazing place. There's a website too Susan. I'd advise you to look it up.

Id guarantee you’ve not been far from one or may have even seen one and not realised it. When I lived on the Black Isle they were quite common. One of the largest uk populations.
Even in Yorkshire snd other parts of England there are decent numbers and it’s doing ok as a species. I’ve spotted them over city centres in York, Leeds and Hull. Not sure what that says on the wider ecological picture as they are generally carrion feeders despite having the ‘tools’ for predation. Too much waste and rubbish lying around? Roadkill ?

They are a lovely sight but where I am (and it’s fairly mid-rural’ I see virtually no small bird species. Some interesting ones like the red kites, Jays , sparrow hawks.... but nothing else other than pigeons, black birds snd the odd solo starling. Cats are at verminous levels around me and I suspect are to blame for much of the absence of small birds. If a proper study was done into the pointless damage they do to British wildlife then we might have a chance at some legislation to control their numbers and roaming abilities. Countries like Australia have realised the damage and acted on it . The numbers are frightening.

Very interesting Stevie would never have thought cat's could have such an impact on the wee small bird's, it's a shame you don't get to see them, I probably take them for granted seeing them on the bird feeder every day

We usually have a great view of Arran but it's been so murky. The old folk around here are saying they've never known weather like it.
