Some of the reviews were embarrassing. The left wing critics in America were seething about how ‘problematic’ the film was and tried to ‘cancel’ the movie because of the directors comments on modern comedy. That’s not even talking about armed police in screenings in New York etc.

The fact that Phoenix, maybe the best actor of his generation, is sending people into a meltdown just for being nominated simply because the film is somehow seen as offensive is hilarious :giggle1:

The outrage aimed at the film is/was pathetic. It’s a movie. It’s no real :56:

Straight white male portrays a individuals descent into insanity..

    Big no no..
    :fear:

But, aye, the scaremongering that Joker was going to inspire another cinema shooter.. completely nonsensical.

Because to me it seemed a bit like abstract art where if you don't get your just not clever enough. People raving about how dark it was, if if that is some kind of recomendation. It was boring.

    Phoenix won the BAFTA.

He’s sweeped every award so far and should round it off with the Oscar next week.

I'm certainly not clever. Don't feel there was anything to get either. Just a story of a guy with mental health issues that got pushed too far. It wasn't a stereotypical comic book movie, more like a psychological thriller.

I think having read what people were saying and knowing what to expect made it more enjoyable for me, than someone going in blind, expecting an action film of sorts.

Mate watch any interview with him down the year.

He’s just one of those guys who’s wired differently. Probably what helps when it comes to acting but watching him sit and try have a conversation with an interviewer and how far off track he goes is mental.

Mental that a comic book character is probably the most coveted role in Hollywood now for ‘serious’ actors.

    What was 'weird' about it?

I admire people who use their spotlight-privilege to address important matters. Much better than crocodile-tears and faux-thanks to the other luvvies.

Phoeinix's passion is animal rights - he's produced and narrated lots of documentaries on the subject - and he slips something in about it at every speech opportunity he gets.

    Mon 'eh Phoenix!

Because you have won an award for your acting in a film. Talk about that. Its not Miss World.

Tbf it’s tiresome seeing all these big celebrities spouting self righteous pish after winning awards. Just comes across as holier than thou most of the time.

Good to see him winning the Oscar though, and he does seem like a genuinely decent guy.

He won the award - he earned his moment in the spotlight - he can talk about whatever he wants!

He's fully aware that he occupies a ridiculously privileged position and he tries to pay some of that back by starting conversations surrounding important ecological and ethical matters. And it's worked - we're talking about it here on a Celtic FC forum!!!

We need MORE Joaquin Phoenix's and less feckless luvvies! He's not the hero we deserved, but the hero we needed... oh, hang on... wrong Batman character!

I understand your point, it's a fair one, respect your opinion :50:

I just don't agree and take the line of @Officer Doofy above.

We may well be talking about it on a Celtic forum but it's not made the slightest bit of difference to me as I won't change anything I do because a celebrity said something, I'm not even arsed about looking into what he said in any more detail either. He seems a nice enough guy but hey ho.
