Yeah it was worse in the world cup for me. The more you use var the worse it is. When football rules were made they assumed certain interpretation, like with offsides and giving the benefit to the attacking team. When VAR is used, more penalties are given, often for very minor contact.

Football needs a rule overhaul to stop diving and exaggerated falls for any of this to be useful, defenders need to be able to use strength and have some protection to allow them to make hard tackles.

Ask any sports fan who doesn't like/watch football why and they will all say the same thing, play acting.

It wouldn't be too hard to put sensors on the corner flags and goal posts and use the same technology as the goal lines to see if the ball is out of play

I was all for it as too many games are decided by referee's mistakes but can't believe how many decisions they still get wrong using it. I now think it should be used for off-side and the ref should be the only one making other decisions eg pens and sending offs by looking at the pitch-side monitor when the guys in the background think he might have got something wrong. At least the fans can watch him and see what's going on. Another problem is the new handball rule which I think is a bit of a joke. I think should be handball if ref thinks it was deliberate or if accidental but stopped or created a goal scoring opportunity although that would still no doubt cause contentious decisions - can't think of anything that would be perfect.

It will take time to settle in and be used properly, but the way it’s being used down south is making it look far more of a farce than it actually is.

They need to put emphasis on the “clear and obvious” point. It shouldn’t take a professional referee more than a maximum of 30 seconds (time to see the incident from various angles) to determine the correct decision. If it does, then it’s not “clear and obvious” and the initial, on-field decision should stand. Similarly, they shouldn’t need four or five minutes of drawing lines on a screen to decide if an offside call is clear - stick with the on-field decision, or give the attacker the benefit of the doubt.

    Eh?

What's so radically different from the two versions ? It's still essentially other officials reviewing replays of certain incidents and either making the decisions themselves or advising the on field official to look again. All of which translates in this country as a collection of cheats reviewing the decisions of the original cheat and as the old saying goes " too many cheats spoil the broth"

For me the only way anyone could believe var would work in this country is if there was a belief that there isn't an institutionalised bias in the officialdom in place.

How so? The people who run Scottish football are either completely incompetent or totally biased.

Edit: sorry getting caught up in the domestic argument I realise now you must be talking about the EL use.

Still think there is a slight bias towards teams from the bigger leagues in that regard.

The difference would be that they'd find it much harder to deny they're cheats. Would put a bit more pressure on to make the right call.

Would they though? They dont have to explain any decisions, they are answerable to no one but themselves.

we also have a media who has the ability to analyse every contentious decision, and does, yet still operate under a cloud of complete denial.

It's used better in Europe than the EPL, * drawing squint lines and all sorts. To be fair the refs have actually been fairly okay so far this year in Europe.

Should benefit us, we rarely ever score offside goals, have many more penalties turned down in our favour than we do against us and don't really have anyone who lashes out off the ball to be set off so shouldnt be in any danger of getting done by it.

Offsides after a goal - usually a delay with the call anyways

I think players diving could be reviewed and given a card after the game

Really hate when it’s called back because there was a small foul in the build up

It’s a good idea but I think it’s being used a lot of places where it’s not working
